Susan G. Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure
I can't think of a better reason to run five kilometers than to promote education and awareness for breast cancer. The Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure takes place on June 5, 2011, at Seattle Center. They need runners as well as fundraisers and volunteers, so even if a few members of your family aren't keen on running, they can still participate.
Registration on race day is $40 for adults, $25 for kids under 12, and $15 for kids under 5. Volunteers, of course, don't have to pay anything, though donations are always accepted. The kids' race will start at 8 a.m. sharp, with the women's-only and coed 5Ks following shortly after. There is also a one-mile walk at 9:10 a.m., for those who would rather keep a slower pace.
Benefit the Boys and Girls Club, the Ballard NW Seniors Center, and the Rotary Club of Ballard at the inaugural Ballard 5K Run and Walk. It's a low-pressure, low-key affair for Seattle residents who want to help their communities and meet their neighbors. Families are encouraged to participate, whether they want to run or walk (or push a stroller).
The race is June 12, 2011, at 8:30 a.m. Registration is between $25 and $35, depending on age, and all entrants receive a t-shirt or hat (for the kids) as a gift of participation. Dogs are allowed at this event, so the whole family can enjoy the festivities.
If you've ever picked up a pet at a local adoption center or volunteered at an animal shelter, you'll definitely want to participate in the Furry 5K. Proceeds benefit the Seattle Animal Shelter, providing food, veterinary services, and shelter to all the neglected and abandoned Seattle pets.
The 12th annual Furry 5K will be held Sunday, June 12, in Seward Park in Seattle. Early registration is $25, but you can also register the day of the event for $30. If you choose that option, however, keep in mind that they cannot accept credit cards at the race venue.
This is another Seattle family fun run that benefits cancer research. The Shore Run/Walk takes place on June 12, 2011, and includes a 5K run/walk as well as a half-mile kids' race. Bring your whole family and don't worry about whether or not you can run the full 5K. Plenty of people participate for the sheer joy of it rather than to win a prize.
