Family Fun Things to Do in Sleepy Hollow, New York

Halloween is just around the corner. Come and explore trails and drive down winding roads and take in all of the beautiful scenery that Sleepy Hollow New York has to offer. Take the family out on a leisurely walk or ride a bike down an uninhibited trail. You can also learn about all of the history behind the fabled name of Sleepy Hollow and what makes this town the place to be every Halloween.

Sleepy Hollow, New York has a population of 10,212 and is famous because of the reference to this town in Washington Irving's classic story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Irving based many of the characters in his story from the residents of Sleepy Hollow.

The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery has graves that have been there since the town was founded over 300 years ago and during Halloween; the most popular costume seen around town is the Headless Horseman as well as colonial ghosts. Washington Irving himself is also buried in The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery along with the real-life inspirations from his classic book, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow".

The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a beautiful sight to behold any time of the year which is host to large trees stretching their branches up towards the skies, roaming hills and the magnificent Pocantico River runs right through the graveyard.

If you and your little goblins are hungry after all of the Trick or Treating is done, stop in and grab a burger and fries at a local restaurant. These food places around Sleepy Hollow are all a family-friendly restaurants and you feel right at home as soon as you walk through the front door.

Once a month beginning in July through November, take the family to The Second Sunday Bazaar which is on Beekman Avenue, the main street through Sleepy Hollow. There are crafts, dancing, music and food which are all in the outdoor market which exhibits all of the many different cultures around the world that exist in Sleepy Hollow.

During the month of October, Legend Weekend which is an annual event and is held each year at Philipsburg Manor which was built in the late 1600's is fun for the entire family to attend. Kids have the opportunity to carve a pumpkin and even grind corn in a gristmill that is water-powered. When nighttime falls upon Sleep Hollow, families can come and hear ghost stories that are told by candlelight.
