Family Hiking Trails in Charlotte

Cheryl Williams
There are several easy family hiking trails in and around Charlotte. This is the perfect way to spend a summer day. Pack a lunch to enjoy along the way as you enjoy some quality time with your family. Here are some of my favorite area hiking spots:

McDowell Park. McDowell Park is a great place to hike on a hot summer's day. The park has 1108 acres of forested terrain. With 7 miles of hiking trails, your family is sure to find this the perfect place to enjoy nature this summer. You may see various forms of wildlife along the way. There are also picnic tables and a Nature Center that is open for your enjoyment. A campground is available if you are interested in spending more than one day on the trails.

U.S. National Whitewater Center. There are 14 miles of trails at the Center which go along the Catawba River, with lake and pond views along the way. The trails vary in intensity from beginner to advanced levels, so you should be able to find just the right trail for your family. If a dog is a part of your family, feel free to bring him along. Just make sure he's on a leash and that you clean up after him along the way. What's so great about the Whitewater Center is the fact that there is plenty to do when you are finished hiking. Whether you want to brave the rapids, the climbing wall, zipline, or bike trail -- there is plenty for the entire family to do.

McAlpine Creek Greenway. McAlpine Creek Greenway is a 7.0 mile route is the perfect family hike. It's an easy hike, whether you are walking on the dirt path or the granular greenway. It weaves through the woods, near a stream, and by two lakes. It isn't unusual to catch glimpses of wildlife along the way. This was always one of my families favorite hikes.

Morrow Mountain State Park. Morrow Mountain is host to over 30 miles of hiking trails with names such as Fall Mountain Trail, Three Rivers Trail, Mountain Loop Trail, and Sugarloaf Mountain Trail. The trails wander over and through the mountains. The trails have a varying level of difficulty, so prove to be enjoyable for the beginner hiker as well as the more experienced hiker.

My family and I have enjoyed each of these trails and feel quite blessed that so many of them are in or near the Charlotte area. Hiking is the perfect family activity. Take your family and explore some of these trails over the summer. You'll have a great time!
