Family Hotel Vientiane Laos

The Family Hotel Vientiane Laos is a new hotel situated on Phang Kham Road; within walking distance of many restaurants and bars where visitors tend to gather in the city. There are a few other hotels nearby, and there seems to be a lot of construction going on in the area.

The outside of the Family hotel Vientiane looks modern and inviting, but there was still work being done on the building. You need to go up a flight of steps so this might be a problem for someone with a wheelchair. The inside looked clean and welcoming. I was offered a selection of rooms, but decided on the cheapest at $15; this seemed a reasonable enough price to me. The next least expensive room was $20. As I found my way to the room I noticed that there seemed to be a lot of building work going on inside the hotel as well.

The room itself was very small, but it was nicely decorated with a modern look; everything brown and white. The bed was a single, but comfortable with a nice duvet; many hotels in SE Asia given you really thin duvet to discourage you from opening the air-con too high. When I turned on the duvet though I found that it was very slow to cool the room down and you couldn't adjust it. This was a shame.

Things I disliked about the hotel

- The air-con in my room wasn't adjustable ( maybe this is just in the cheaper rooms)

- Building work was still going on ( I would imagine this will finish soon)

- No food available in the hotel - as far as I could see

- Web site offers very little information and is poorly constructed (still early days)

Things I liked about the hotel

- Free Wi Fi that worked quit well most of the time

- Cable TV with movie channels in English

- Nice new flat screen television

- Comfortable bed

- Nice room - a bit small

- Friendly staff

Another thing I liked was that you could buy a phone card outside and use the phone in the room much the same way as you would if you topped up your mobile.

I would use this hotel again. I think that it will be a really good choice when all the building work is complete. It is quite good value for money.
