I first learned of Family Matters when my co-worker did some volunteer work there. Located at 7731 North Marshfield Avenue in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, Family Matters helps build the community by offering programs which support leadership and personal growth. It's like a second home to people, who go there seeking encouragement and acceptance.

I have to say, that when I visited Family Matters prior to signing up for volunteer work, I was a little overwhelmed because of all the volunteer opportunities that were available, and I had a difficult time choosing which one would be best suited for me. I was torn between the community tutoring opportunity and the Respectful Classroom opportunity.

I really wanted to learn more about the Respectful Classroom opportunity because I hadn't ever been involved in a volunteer situation where the focus was on teaching young people how to work together, listen, communicate and follow through on given tasks in a classroom environment. It makes sense, however, because if kids are able to use these skills more effectively, they are more likely to be more academically successful.

Other volunteer opportunities that Family Matters has available are working in the office doing data entry or other clerical work, helping with their Walk-A-Thon or working in the Development office. I also was interested in volunteering as a speaker to talk to students about career paths.

If you want more information on how you can volunteer at Family Matters, call 773-465-6011 or visit their website.
