Family Photo Christmas Card Ideas

Unique Family Photo Opportunities

Taking a family photo in a studio is not the only way to take a Christmas family photo this year. There are plenty of ways that you can create a unique card that won't require sitting fees. You can also save money if you use your own digital camera and print from an online website that specializes in affordable prints.

Tools needed:

Digital Camera with auto-timer

Snapfish or similar photo printing site membership (free membership)

Willing family to have some fun

Money to purchase your unique photos when done (19cents/print or less)

Mountain Photo:

Take the family on an outing to the mountains and have everyone bring along their favorite outdoor gear such as fuzzy sweaters, colorful beanies, or winter gear. The idea is to dress in a fun way that shows your Christmas spirit. Upon arrival to the mountains, find a nice scenic backdrop. Arrange the family in front of the scene, place the camera somewhere that views the entire family, and press the automatic timer. Take many of these so you can later find the one that suits your family the best. This photo will be a good way to connect with family, create a really cool photo for sharing and captures the feel of winter. After choosing your favorite picture, upload on Snapfish and use their customized frames to add a snow border or any of the borders that you like.

Santa's Family:

Outside your home, decorate some things to look like a sleigh. This could be a few chairs, a wooden wagon, or whatever you have on hand. Sit the family in the sleigh for the photo. Each family member will be dressed as Santa, Mrs. Clause, elves, or reindeer. Throw fake snow around the sleigh and snap some photos using the automatic timer. If you do not have the tools to create a sleigh, stand around the Christmas tree instead. Use a Santa-themed frame under Snapfish to make your photo pop! For an extra added touch, have a family member hold up a largely decorated sign that says "Merry Christmas from the Johnson Family".

Printing:

As mentioned before, look at the frames under Snapfish (or whatever photo-hosting site you are using, such as York or Clark photos). Find a frame that matches the theme of your photo. Print the photos using the shipping method or printing method with free pickup at places like Walgreens. If you're so inclined, you can use the paint program on your computer to add words such as "Merry Christmas" on your photo.

Card making:

Buy some solid colored cardstock at a craft store or in the craft section of stores like Wal-Mart. Fold in half and use scrapbooking double-sided tape to tape your personalized Christmas family photo to the front side. Write a personal message inside, or use pre-printed letters to tape inside. Sign each one and add a personal crafty touch if you're in the mood such as glitter glue or ribbon. Send out to all your friends and embrace the holidays as a family!

This is fun! We have a tradition called Christmases Past and Present where we make a slideshow from our pictures.
