Nostalgia abounds at Lake Winnie, which has failed to take on the more modern, "themed" feel of large parks such as Six Flags. Rides such as the Bumper Cars and Fly-O-Plane bring back memories for many a parent, while still being enjoyed by the younger generations. You won't find leagues of restaurants and "tourist traps" charging exorbitant prices here-even admission prices are low.
Younger families will enjoy the many kiddie rides, such as the Lady Bugs and Jumbo Elephants. Lake Winnie's unique Cannonball wooden rollercoaster provides an excellent first-time coaster ride, while the Wild Lightnin' satisfies the younger ones' coaster fever. The atmosphere is definitely very family-friendly, and the small park makes losing your children almost impossible. Lake Winnie's namesake lake, around which the park is situated, gives the park an ambience many have come to love.
While this park appeals greatly to many, it leaves others dissatisfied. Some cite a dumpy feel throughout the park, which is clearly visible on some rides, where the paint is starting to peel and the ride design is antiquated. The attention to intricate detail and custom themed rides, attractions, and restaurants found in resorts such as Disney World and Universal Orlando is clearly missing here-you won't find lovable characters at every street corner and ride operators wearing costumes here.
One of the park's largest weak points is the lack of true thrill rides. While the Cannonball and new Oh-Zone vertical drop ride provide some thrills, riding only those doesn't justify paying the admission. The assortment of relatively tame rides can make a second visit boring.
Lake Winnepesaukah is probably best for those with children and those who simply want an exciting afternoon for a low price. Because of the park's small number of rides, it receives few out-of-town visitors. If you've been to several larger amusement parks, Lake Winnie probably won't interest you. However, for many, it provides a wonderful summer activity to share with friends and family.
Unlimited ride passes can be purchased at the gate for $20.00 per person, while a strip of 14 tickets costs $12.00. Non riders can gain admission to the park for $5.00. Lake Winnepesaukah is located in Rossville, GA, about a half hour south of Chattanooga by car. The postal address is 1730 Lakeview Dr. Chattanooga, TN 3074.
