Most of what a teenager feels is normal. While they are feeling different from everyone else, they are not different at all.
Puberty is a very emotional time; some parents mistake this for depression.
Depression is also a normal feeling, we all feel depressed sometimes during our life but we deal with it and get over it, some people no matter what age, sometimes can not deal with it alone and it is important to recognize that.
Everyone is an individual so our tolerance of what we can deal with on our own may be different, there is usually a reason behind the depression, like an abusive parent, or an abusive wife or husband, these can be harder to figure out, if the communication is not good.
Communication is so important for every human being, every person has to have someone they can talk to, maybe a teacher or someone else's parent, for some maybe a counselor or even a hotline of interest, some kind of communication.
Sometimes our teenager may all of a sudden start crying right out of the blue, and not know why, I remember I did when I was 14 I could not tell my mom what was wrong because I did not know, I had such a feeling of sadness, eventually we found it to be growing pains and I did grow out of it.
If a family confers with each other every evening for at least 30 minutes this would be a time that the whole family could recognize each other and hopefully find each other doing just fine, it can also be a time when you may discover one of your family members need you and you need to be there.
Not only do we worry about the kids, some kids are worrying about their parents or parent, you may find that there is a situation where the teenager is more adult than the parent is, and the parent needs you, so to be there for each other is important.
There is no age barrier when it comes to depression or sad feelings or anxiety, it hits all age groups, just to know why or what the cause is can be the hard part sometimes.
Keep communication and strong family ties.
