I will start this review with the bold statement: The Family Tree Maker 2010 is the most complete version of the Family Tree Maker application to this date.
The procurements and installation of this software went without glitches. At the first run, I was prompted to install new updates, which I did. It is nice to see that company cares about customers, and does its best to provide them with latest version of software.
The major change in this version, is a special feature that was added to the interface, and which gives special touch to it. Now, instead of name labels in the family members view, you can choose to display photos of each family member. In order for this to work, you need to have photos of your family members already associated with the Family Tree Maker files on the hard drive. You can also disable this option, and show text labels instead.
In addition to this enhancement, interface is now friendlier than before. You can navigate through your data in much simpler way. Program now indicates one's direct line of ascent or descent by arrow, and that helps you a lot when navigating through family generations spawning across multitude of pages.
You don't have to take notes anymore while you search for detail about long forgotten family members: information is now displayed in a box that contains all data about that person, while engaged in research or merging.
Merging has become easier with this version. By selecting "Places" on the tool bar, you will open up interactive map that is based on Bing Maps, maps service provided by Microsoft. There is no more need to print maps from Google Maps page.
Family Tree Maker 2010 Essentials is a major version milestone for this application. With new improvements in application interface and Places feature, I have no option, but to recommend it to anyone conducting family research.
