Family Vacations that Help You Feel Healthy

Steve Thompson
While it's true that just about any family vacation is beneficial to your health and well-being, some vacation destinations are more conducive to healthy living than others. A trip to Las Vegas, for example, might be exciting and new, but spending your vacation days cooped up in a casino playing blackjack won't help you feel healthy.

So where can you go to restore your healthy glow?

Rocky Mountain National Park

Fresh air, interesting wildlife, and more than 350 miles of scenic trails make Rocky Mountain National Park the perfect family vacation spot when you need to feel more healthy. The fresh air and gorgeous views will help you get in touch with your inner naturalist, and there are plenty of activities to get your heart pumping and your lungs working overtime.

This is the best place to visit in the summer months, when the weather is cool enough for comfort but you won't spend your family vacation wrapped up in a heavy-duty parka. Go fishing, horseback riding, biking, hiking, and even backpacking if you're really ready to rough it. While you're there, you can also explore surrounding Colorado cities, such as Boulder.

Carlsbad Caverns

It's perhaps the most popular family vacation destination in New Mexico, and for good reason. Carlsbad Caverns offers numerous activities to help you feel more healthy, from exploring underground caves to hiking the surrounding trails, and there are lots of educational opportunities as well.

Adults must pay the $6 entrance fee, which lasts three days, and children under the age of 15 are allowed to enter free. There are also fees associated with guided tours, but you can easily explore the self-guided caves without spending another dime. It's easy on your wallet good for your health.

Small Town Exploration

When you live in an urban environment, it's easy to forget that elsewhere in the world, it's okay to slow down and take time to breathe. If you want to stick close to home for family vacations (and watch your spending), consider taking a few days to visit several small towns in your state (or even surrounding states). Spend one or two days in each town, then move on.

This is a great way to slow the pace of life and see what's available in your own backyard. A family vacation doesn't have to be exotic or life-changing; it just needs to give you the opportunity to recharge your batteries. Stay in comfortable hotels, see the sights, and maybe even make some new friends.

Beach Vacation

There are few family vacations that will make you feel more healthy than a trip to the beach. The sun, sand, and surf will rejuvenate your spirit as well as your body, and there are always plenty of activities to occupy your time. In fact, the tendency with beach vacations is to over schedule, so make sure to leave some down time for relaxation and introspection.

Choose a hotel close to the beach and try to visit less crowded areas. Gulf Shores in Alabama is a great choice, especially in the early summer. Even if you spend your entire family vacation walking the shore and picking up sea shells, you'll feel better when it's time to return home.
