Family Watchdog Offers Free Lists of All Sex Offenders Living or Working Near You

Being Aware of Local Sex Offenders Will Make Your Family Safer

The Family Watchdog website allows users to look up all sex offenders listed that live or work in their area. The Family Watchdog website, here, is very simple to use. Type in a zip code and in seconds you have a complete list of sex offenders registered as living or working there. You can sign up for free email alerts for any new sex offenders living or working in your area.

On Family Watchdog you can also get a registered sex offender count by state. In my home state of Florida, there are 50,554 registered sex offenders. In the Fort Lauderdale area alone there are 809 registered sex offenders. As a parent of four children these statistics frighten me. Even more disheartening is that in the small city of Weston there are 29 registered sex offenders. Weston Florida was ranked the 73rd best place to live by Money Magazine report. This ranks Weston Florida as the best place to live in Florida according to the Money magazine list. Parents pay top dollars for homes in Weston unaware of the fact a sex offender may be right down the street.

Not all convicted sex offenders actually commit another sex crime. Sex Offender.com has statistics on re-arrest rates on people previously convicted of sex crimes. The reports states that child offenders have a 52% rearrest rate. While rapists have a 39% rearrest rate. Statistics like that will make any parent nervous. The Family Watchdog website reports that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 6 boys are molested before they turn 18.

Parents need to be fully aware of any and all sex offenders in their area. Use the Family Watchdog website to get familiar with local offenders. Depending on the age of your child it may be appropriate to show your them the pictures of local sex offenders. Many children believe that they would know what a "bad person" looks like. The fact is many sex offenders appear very normal and friendly looking. Perhaps show them a picture of a sex offender on the Family Watchdog website and ask would you be afraid of this person? It is important not to scare children into thinking everyone is bad. Making children aware will help keep them much safer.

Apparently this site also register people who are convicted of "adultery" and "sodomy", even "sodomy" between consenting adults. That's pretty ridiculous. What century are we living in?

I don't believe one needs to worry so much concerning First time sex offenders as they have a very low recidivist rate, The repeat offender, the violent and those who did not know their victim are the ones who need to be watched more closely.
It's time to register the the drug dealers and DUI's They kill thousands of kids each year. Those who have a high rate of recidivism.

98% of new sex offenses are committed by family members and those known to the family. It's about prevention through parenting.

Very important info. I did want to add that it is vital to know the details as some sex offenders are there for "spousal abuse" and are not necessarily a threat to children. Also, people move and there can be a time lag in updating the info. Still, these sites can be very useful.
