Family Weekend Getaways in Sandusky, Ohio
Getaway at Kalahari Resort, Cedar Point, or Great Wolf Lodge
Cedar Point: One Cedar Point Drive, Sandusky, Ohio 44870
Cedar Point is fun family getaway during the summer. The amusement park is open from May 15th through to weekends only in October. Cedar Point has 17 roller coasters and each one is more thrilling than the next. They have over eighty rides so you are sure to find one that you love. For a complete ride list including restrictions click here.
For families with smaller children, Cedar Point has four smaller parks inside just for kids. We managed to spend an entire day between Camp Snoopy, Planet Snoopy, Kiddy Kingdom, and Gemini Children's area.
One day admission to Cedar Point is $45.99 for adults and $19.99 for children under 48" tall. They offer ticket packages for more than one day or if you stay at the Cedar Point Resort. Soak City is Cedar Point's water park which can be included with your park admission.
Kalahari Resort: 7000 Kalahari Dr., Sandusky, Ohio 44870
Kalahari Resort is a great three day getaway any time of year. The indoor water park is great when it's cold out or on a rainy summer day. Kalahari's outdoor water park features activity pools, hot tubs, dry play, expanded sun deck, sand volleyball courts, and shuffleboard courts.
We have only stayed at Kalahari in the winter and the resort offers a great weekend escape from Ohio's cold winter. The indoor water park is huge with slides, a play area, a wave pool, and a water roller coaster. Kalahari is an excellent resort for families with children over ten since many of the slides are rather big and require kids to be at least 48" tall.
Kalahari offers a game room, miniature golf, and several restaurants and snack areas. Some of the food is a little expensive since they have a captive audience, especially in the winter. Kalahari also has a spa and fitness room for adults and a pottery painting area for the kids.
Kalahari costs $42 for a one day weekend pass but pricing varies if you stay at the resort. For our family it cost $299 for one night and it included water park passes for the entire family. The pass was good from the time we checked in until 3pm the following day. So you can check out of your room and still enjoy the water park.
Great Wolf Lodge: 4600 Milan Road, Sandusky, Ohio 44870
Great Wolf Lodge is one of our favorite weekend getaways. The indoor water park is smaller than Kalahari but it offers much more for families with younger kids. Great Wolf Lodge is just that, a lodge with a twelve level water fort and a lazy river.
The Lodge also offers a story time at the Clock Tower. Every night kids in pajamas gather around to hear a bedtime story. This is a fun way to settle kids down for the night. The Clock Tower also has daily shows with their animatronic forest characters. This is the first thing my kids want to see whenever we go to Great Wolf Lodge.
Great Wolf Lodge's Wolf Den Suite makes staying in a hotel fun for the family. Accommodations include a 'cave' area with bunk beds and the kids' own television. They also have a fitness room, game room, restaurants, and snack areas.
Great Wolf Lodge is slightly cheaper than Kalahari. A one night stay is around $219 which includes park passes. Guests can still play at the water park on the day they check out until the park closes which is a really nice feature. You get your money's worth at Great Wolf Lodge.
You can visit at least two of these great getaways in weekend. Combining the indoor water parks with Cedar Point makes for fun family weekend.

Post a CommentI love Sandusky. It's a few hours drive from south central Michigan, and many of our schools field trip there for Cedar Point trips.
We've been to the Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, Ohio and absolutely loved it! Actually planning a trip back there in the next couple of months.
Sounds so great, I am ready to go!
We're lucky enough to be close to all three of these, but only been to Cedar Point so far. Been meaning to hit the others though. Great job.
Sounds like such fun!
What a beautiful sound place these places are. I think they'd make a great first OR second honeymoon. Good review.
We have a Great Wolf Lodge too. It's magnificent!
Kim, great report, wish I was a kid again!!
I've been to Cedar Point when I was a child a couple of times. Always had great fun there.
I have heard some great things about Cedar Point--I'm a roller coaster fanatic, so I really, really want to go! We actually have a Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, KS! I've never stayed there, but we've looked around and eaten at the restaurant inside. :)
