Family-Friendly Summer Festivals and Events in Phoenix

Steve Thompson

Despite the triple-digit heat, festivals and other summer events abound in Phoenix, many of which include indoor activities so attendees can take a break from sweating and panting. Although there are more festivals during October and November, when the weather has cooled down, there is plenty of family-friendly fun to be had during summer vacation.

Christmas in July

Head to downtown Glendale for the annual Christmas in July event, which this year is being held on July 16. There is no charge for either parking or admission, and there are lots of events for both adults and children. Meet Santa Claus, make holiday cards, get your shopping done early, and taste some of the local shops' finest treats.

There is also a school supply drive that benefits local grade schools. You can donate backpacks, pencils, tissues, folders, glue, and other necessary supplies so the kids will be well prepared when school starts up again.

Downtown Chandler Art Walk

On the third Friday of every month, visit downtown Chandler for the monthly Art Walk, which celebrates bluegrass music and local artisans. Walk down the streets of this historic Phoenix-area town and meet the creators of these works of art.

There is food, face-painting, games, and other activities for people of all ages, and best of all it's free. This is a great activity for kids who are interested in art or fancy themselves artists, but anyone can enjoy the festivities.

Hot Summer Nights Concert Series

Who doesn't like a night of great music? The Hot Summer Nights Concert Series is free to the public, and features live music as well as other activities, from balloon animals to face painting. This is one of the most popular Phoenix summer festivals. Bands play original tunes as well as covers of famous artists. Bad Bad Rodney & The Players will perform on July 9, and The JJs Band is featured on July 23.

You might want to take the whole family, or this could be an excellent date night away from the kids. Whatever the case, make sure to bring along a snack and some water.

Garden Flashlight Tours

Visit the Desert Botanical Garden on Thursday or Saturday night in July and August for Garden Flashlight Tours. This is one of the most celebrated organizations in Phoenix, and the flashlight tours are perfect for children who are interested in wildlife, from insects and snakes to flowers and other plants. The tour starts at 7 p.m. and concludes around 9 p.m.

Summer Twilight Tours

During the summer, the Deer Valley Rock Art Center offers twilight tours of their facility, which includes an exploration of Native American culture as well as interesting tidbits about desert flora and fauna. The tour involves a quarter-mile hike, but there are no steep hills or rocky terrain to prevent children from attending.

Twilight tours cost between $2.50 (children under twelve) and $6.50 (adults), with discounts for senior citizens. They take place on Saturdays from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., and you must make a reservation prior to attending.
