Bridges do so much more for us then just getting us from point A to point B, they also shape our skylines, and give cities an everlasting touch of ambiance. Some of the most beautiful bridges can be found right here in the U.S., starting with one of the most famous, the Golden Gate Bridge, located in San Francisco, California. This suspension bridge was completed in 1937, and connects the city of San Francisco to the city of Sausalito, California. The bridge has been a focal point in many films from Dirty Harry, A View to a Kill, and The Love Bug.
A Cultural Icon
The Brooklyn Bridge, located over the East River, runs from Manhattan Street to Adams Street is known as a cultural icon, and it is a famous landmark. The bridge was designed in 1867, and is adorned with gothic towers constructed entirely of granite. The bridge officially opened in 1883, and allows for a magnificent view of Manhattan and the harbor.
An Engineering Marvel
Another famous bridge that allows you to take in the views whether you are driving north or south is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It showcases the mighty surge of the Atlantic Ocean, the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, and is the soaring grace of an engineering marvel. Both a tourist attraction and a travel convenience, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel connects Virginia's Eastern Shore with the Virginia mainland at Virginia Beach near Norfolk, Virginia.
Antique Bridges
Some of the most beautiful bridges in the U.S. are covered bridges from another era, but still remain with us today, delighting all that pass through them. Bedford, Pennsylvania is famous for their 14-covered bridges that enhances the town's scenery. They were built with covers to protect them from the weather as exposed superstructures rot easier. From 1867 to 1902 these bridges were constructed to allow workers to cross the local creeks.
The Highest Bridge In The World
Bridges are built for the purpose of getting to destinations that would otherwise be impossible for travelers. This is how the Royal Gorge Bridge came into place. Before this suspension bridge in Canon City, Colorado was constructed in 1929, visitors could only view the Royal Gorge from the bottom of the canyon. Once automobiles became popular, more and more visitors frequented the canyon, and it was soon apparent that a bridge was necessary. Engineers soon began planning the creation of the highest and most outstanding bridge in the world. The Royal Gorge bridge is often referred to as an engineering marvel.
