Famous Dave's: a Review

Eva Gallant
Famous Dave's is at 3 Cabela Boulevard, in South Portland, Maine, is one in a chain of restaurants with locations in 37 states and a menu specializing in BBQ.

The chain's mascot Wilbur is a large, pink pig! Sporting his white apron, he often can be seen greeting customers and escorting them into the friendly dining room. H aving been to two or threerestaurants in the chain, I can vouch for the fact that all the dining rooms look pretty similar; wooden chairs, tables covered in red and white checkered table cloths, and a roll of paper towels on each table, to help clean up what you can't lick off. (And, believe me, you'll want to lick that yummy sauce off your fingers! It's too good to let any of it go to waste.)

As soon as you open the door to the restaurant, the enticing aroma of BBQ grabs you, and there's no way you can think of leaving until you've chowed down on some of that good stuff!

There are so many choices on the menu, it's really difficult to decide what you want to order. It's definitely a great reason for repeat visits; you can try something different each time! Hubby settled on the Beef Brisket Dinner with sides of baked beans and coleslaw. Corn on the cob and a cornbread muffin accompany each of the dinner choices. The beans were flavored with jalepeno peppers, beef brisket, and hot sausage--a treat for the taste buds! The coleslaw was creamy with pineapple and a hint of horseradish, and the corn muffin was fresh and warm from the oven.

My son opted for the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich, which had lots of tasty chicken on a large fresh bun, and a side of crispy french fries. (I stole one of his fries, and it was delicious: cripy on the outside and soft on the inside,)

My selection was Dave's Sassy BBQ Salad. I had the choice of pulled chicken, beef brisket, or chopped Georgia pork on top of my salad. I went with the pork, because I had read on the menu that the pork was "juicier than a Gerogia peach." (Not a lie, by the way.) The tasty pork came on lettuce, tomatoes, schreded cheddar cheese, shoestring potatoes, and smoked bacon, all tossed with Dave's homemade honey-BBQ dressing. It was a huge serving, more than I could finish, even though I was really hungry. And of course it came with one of those marvelous muffins....so fresh, moist, and warm.

Sadly, there was no room after all that for dessert. I wish I'd had the forethought to request a piece of their "better than Mom's" pecan pie to take home. Oh, well, maybe next visit; I'm sure there will be many more!

If you aren't drooling already, you may want to check out their website. Click here to feast your eyes on some more fabulous BBQ, to peruse the menu, and to find a location near you.
