Famous Hamburger Commercials

Janet Hunt
Americans have had a ongoing love affair with the hamburger. Popeye's Wimpy stated, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!" The hamburger was first introduced to America by German immigrants in early to mid nineteenth century. The first restaurant reported to have sold a hamburger in the United States was in an elite New York establishment called Delmonico's in 1834. It was called the "Hamburg Steak." The hamburger gained national popularity in the 1920's when it was introduced by White Castle with an extensive marketing campaign. Since that time, there have been many memorable hamburger commercials. Here are a few...

Where's the Beef?

Some of you may remember the 1984 Wendy's commercial "Where's the beef?" In it, three elderly ladies gaze on an oversized bun with a tiny beef pattie in the middle and insist on knowing, "where's the beef!" USAToday.com reports this commercial chosen as one of the top ten commercials of all time.

We fell in love with that little old lady who dared ask such a question! Actress Clara Peller became an overnight sensation! http://www.spike.com/video/wendys-commercial/2423864?cid=YSSP

Have it Your Way

What do Americans want out of their hamburgers? Most fast food restaurants including Wendy's, McDonald's, and Burger King advertise quarter pound beef patties and they all claim to be 100 percent beef. So, the question may no longer be "Where's the beef?" Maybe it is "How do you like your beef?" Who can forget the Burger King commercial, "Have it Your Way?" Hold the Pickles, Hold the Lettuce...Special orders don't upset us. All we ask is that you let us serve it your way! One commercial features a "Supreme's-like" group and their rendition of this now famous 70's hamburger jingle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mEXV7D4qNE

You Deserve a Break Today

Looking to those golden arches of McDonald's who can forget the lovable Ronald McDonald, Grimace and the Hamburgler. The Hamburgler once dreamed everything he touched turned to cheeseburgers. Oh no he didn't! He touched Grimace!

Or this famous tune? "You deserve a break today, so get up and get away, to McDonald's! http://www.yourememberthat.com/media/150/You_Deserve_A_Break_Today/

Of course, you can't say McDonald's without talking about "two all-beef, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!"

The Crave Case

Okay, you White Castle fans! This list could not be complete without the cravings of millions of Americans for those tiny small square burgers called "slyders!" Harold and Kumar risked life in limb on a road trip to White Castle in the 2004 movie , "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle."

The Harold & Kumar movie was top-notch. I highly recommend it. As for the quality of the actual hamburgers, I'd go with Wendy's.

oh and great little read down memory lane you put together here.

You know where that "where's the beef" commercial got its start, hunh? I'm pretty sure it was New Orleans, but I can't remember the details so as to nail that down. But for sure the "Cha-ching" thing started in the Superdome at Saints games, and kudos on the Delmonico reference. One of the article I have on AC includes some Delmonico's info in it, but not the Hamburg reference, although I remember seeing that when doing the article. Best to you.

I've always loved hamburgers. It's "what's for dinner" as the red meat fan club insists! Nice article bout burgers!

You made me want a hamburger! White Castle goes by the name Krystals in GA.

@Tom Lund: I hope you spelled it right on your undies!

A bit of trivia, if I'm correct: I believe Barry Manilow developed the newer "You Deserve a Break Today" for McDonalds and even played it at some of his performances. He did quite a few commercials for various companies.
