Fan Game Review: Sonic Robo Blast 2

C.B. Jones
Sonic Robo blast 2 is a fan game, developed using a supped/enhanced/roided up version of the original Doom engine.Think Sonic 3D Blast, only this is computable with PC, Mac and Linux computers and completely not horrible.

Seeing as Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a fan game, there are a few liberties taken with the certain parts of the game mechanics. Sonic and his friends still jump on top of enemies to destroy them. No sense in excluding that useful staple in platforming gameplay. But now, They can also use those gold rings found in levels, and shoot them at Robotniks henchmen.

At first, I didn't think this feature would work well at all with this sort of game. Shadow the Hedgehog used guns...That game didn't revive the series to it's former glory. This being a Doom modification, It ends up working out pretty well.

You don't even really need to use the shooting functions if you don't want to. It's totally possible to play Sonic Robo Blast 2 without shooting at anything. Of course, being able to snipe baddies from long range tends to make things a bit more interesting in the long run. And It's easier than lining up Sonic, Knuckles or Tails for a spin Dash from five feet away, only to miss time it and wiff on your attack.

Aside form the decent single player story mode, Sonic Robo Blast offers more than a few multiplayer options. You can play Co-op story mode, Race3(winner decided by points or completion time), Match(standard death match, using rings as ammo), Tag and Capture the flag.

An active community of modders and bored fans means you should have little trouble finding someone to play this game with online. There are plenty of player and level add-ons to download if you get tired of using the default three playable characters.

This is a fun game, but it's not without it's faults. Sonic's trademark is being able to run threw levels, look in and out of slops, and just be an all around speed demon. You don't get that same sense of speed in Sonic Robo Blast 2 as you do in other Sonic fan games. The way levels are set up, your more likely to explore every nook and cranny before breaking any time trail records first(which may not be a bad thing, because there's a ton of hidden stuff in this game.)

If you like Sonic the Hedgehog games for the speed alone, Sonic Robo Blast 2 might not be your cut of tea. If you enjoy hunted for emeralds and finding hidden areas, give this game a try. If you own a portable gaming device with Linux booted on it, Sonic Robo Blast 2 would be the perfect game to play on that.

"Sonic's trademark... .. to be an all around speed demon".

And you can't do this? I'm sorry, I've played the game enough to know that you don't -have- to look everywhere and not go as fast as possible. Hell, time trials are one of the things that are regularly contested - a good run through the first level can nab you 15 seconds or less. Or you can explore it. Game doesn't force you to do either of them. Besides, exploration is one of those classic game features that basically all of the post SA games lack.

Next, "But now, They can also use those gold rings found in levels, and shoot them at
    Robotniks henchmen."

No. You can't. If I recall, it was originally a cheat, or console command, called "RINGSLINGER". This isn't enabled by default, it's not in the options, it's not mentioned anywhere other than console command lists. It can be used in mods, but as the standalone game... it isn't even part of.

Slopes, unfortunately, are not part of the game, but after playing throug
