Fanpop! - Newest Social Networking Site

Fanpop is the Newest Face in the Next Generation of Social Networking Sites

Joshua Cook
For those of you out there who, like me, love the social networking sites, but are just getting a little sick and tired of the MySpaces and Facebooks of the internet, open your eyes to the new breed of social networking sites, like Fanpop. Instead of just being an aimless, apparent random, gathering of individuals, who have no other agenda than to collect 'friends', Fanpop, and many sites like it, are gathering people with similar interests, and letting them communicate.

Fanpop, the new social networking site, combines the user friendliness of sites MySpace, with the actual fan interaction of fan sites. It starts in the usual way: set up an account, create your profile (this is where strike one occurs, since it does not have the profile page customization that MySpace has), and include your personal bio and links. Nothing special or fancy yet, right? Then you hop onto the Fanpop homepage, which is where the fun, and addictiveness, starts with this social networking site.

Communities of fans creating directories of interests... This is the main goal of the Fanpop social networking site. By letting users create new 'spots' for almost anything they may happen to be a fan of, the creators have basically created the ultimate possibility in internet geekdom. A place to let your geek flag fly for whatever you want, and to find others with the same geek flags.

The real addictiveness of the Fanpop social networking site comes when you actually start jumping around the Fanpop 'spots'. Each spot has sections that users are able to post to. Granted, they are all the same things as the other sites, but in a more pop fandom way. You have your sections for videos, forums, list of members, a couple ads (gotta pay the bills), and related 'spots'. The ones that I enjoy, and are a little different, are ones such as the 'Fan Picks' section, which lets fans post polls - complete with pictures - for other fans to vote on; the 'Headlines' section, which pulls headlines off news sources that are specific to the 'spot'; a 'Links' section that enables users to submit their own links (which could come in handy for a little Associated Content article promotion); and the 'Soapbox', which allows users to post their own, original articles on the 'spot' topic. Of course, you can also send messages, pick favorites, and become 'fans' of other users.

Right now, the Fanpop social networking site, is in the beta stages, but promises more and better things to come. As long as they stay on the path they are on, and keep focusing on the pop fandom feel they have given the site, Fanpop will have a long and happy life.

One more recommendation while you are there, check out the Associated Content fan 'spot'. A little low on fans, but I know we can change that.

  • Fanpop gathers users with like interests.
  • 'Spots' are like mini fan sites.
  • Still in Beta stage, so better things are to come.

:) I'm just learning about social networking, so for me it's hard work. I'm on linkedin, facebook, myspace, digg, the usual culprits, I just started my own blog on blogspot, called LAhipChic and I learned how to put a widget with all my associated content articles in the blog. I learned all this by reading articles like yours on associated content. :) pretty cool even though it is still making my head spin!
