MisMatch's "The Journey" offers up the answer to the "what if?" question, "What if Free Dominguez from Kidneythieves joined a metal band?" Fans of the Kidneythieves may even mistake MisMatch as a Free Dominguez side project. However, the fact of the matter is MisMatch is fronted by Janet Star, who like Dominguez is both mysterious and seductive.
MisMatch's music fuses together bass drum and metal guitar riffs with the alluring aptitude of Star's vocals. At first listen to "The Journey" Star may seem out of place with the background band she fronts, but it's very possible that the similarity to Free Dominguez is not allowing me to separate the two.
You can hear a little of what I'm talking about on MisMatch's songs, "Nation" and "Circles," and Kidneythieves' "Zerospace." Both Star and Dominguez share the same vocal range. I love the band Kidneythieves and believe MisMatch can be a great rock group as well. Their music is solid and Star is enigmatic and interesting enough to engage listeners to want to hear more.
Top to bottom, "The Journey" is a decent album; the only beef I have (which isn't really a beef), other than sounding like Free Dominguez, is that certain songs are more metal while others sound more alternative. This probably won't make any difference going forward as all of "The Journey" makes for good listening.
Stand out songs on "The Journey" are "Nation," "Circles," and "Tired of Self Blame." I look forward to hearing more from MisMatch and hope they can develop a dedicated audience much like Kidneythieves have. They've definitely won me over.
