Fantastic CD: "The Bridge" by Marc Gunn

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a copy of The Bridge, Marc Gunn's latest CD. And then buy more copies to give as gifts.

This CD was intended to literally serve as a bridge between traditional Irish music and American music, and the influences of blues, jazz, and even rock are readily to be heard, especially in the five songs written by Marc himself.

If you are already a fan of Marc's, you may be surprised at the sound of this CD. The autoharp is still prominent, but the sound is less traditional. The title track, "The Bridge", an original by Marc,is a ballad that is certain to touch your heart. It is immediately followed by my favorite Marc Gunn performance ever, his rendition of "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." This song was great as a performance video, but on The Bridge, it is even better with the addition of a singing partner, Jaimie Haeuser, whose voice perfectly complements and underscores Marc's. Following that is a very upbeat rendition of the traditional favorite, "Black Velvet Band." And every track after is a standout. There is not weak song on this entire 12-song collection.

Also, this is without doubt the best band of musicians that Marc has ever featured on a CD. With bodhran, fiddle, flute, guitar and mandolin joining Marc's autoharp, the music is just outstanding and provides the perfect support for the vocals.

Marc sings here with more sincerity and professionalism than aon any of his many earlier and estimable musical projects. With this CD, I believe that Marc has reached every goal he intended for himself. It is greatly to be hoped that he will continue to record with these musicians and provide us with such perfect, fresh, renditions of songs both traditional and original.
