Fantasy Baseball 2008 Second Base Sleepers

Which Second Basemen Should You Take a Look at to Maximize the Value from Your Second Base Position?

Forrest W. Kobayashi
Fantasy baseball teams are highly dependent on their second basemen to deliver a solid set of statistics to their fantasy roster. Many of the top second basemen can deliver in all five rotisserie categories, but second base is a position that needs to be selected carefully, as it can help to cover up some team's weaknesses. There are several speedy options out there for owners in need of stolen bases, and many of the middle tier of second basemen also produce big time run numbers.

Who are the top second basemen, and where should I draft my starter?

Chase Utley is the undisputed top second baseman this year, and he has been at the top for several seasons now. He has an incredible power bat, delivers solid run and RBI numbers, and can even steal bases, all while delivering a .300+ batting average. Expect to spend your first round pick on the guy if you want top production from your second base slot.

No Alfonso Soriano for second base this year, since he moved to the outfield for good last season. Other top names include Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles, and Robinson Cano from the New York Yankees. Since you are likely to pay a premium price for any of these three players, it is best to wait until the middle rounds to find a second baseman who is suitable for your roster.

Who are the best values at second base for fantasy baseball this season?

Luis Castillo, New York Mets

If you are looking for a rock-solid addition to your lineup, look no further than the Mets Luis Castillo. He will be able to deliver you 85+ runs, 15+ stolen bases, and a .300+ batting average playing in a strong New York Mets lineup. There is a little risk involved, considering that he has had minor problems with injuries the past couple of seasons, but he is one of my favorite undervalued second basemen, and you'll get solid three category production out of him.

Mark Ellis, Oakland Athletics

Mark Ellis, who has struggled with injuries since he entered the league, finally had a full, healthy season with the Athletics last season, and his great health had a positive impact on his statistical output. He delivered 19 home runs, along with 84 runs scored and 76 RBI. He even added in 9 stolen bases and a .276 batting average. Those are some pretty impressive numbers for a second baseman who had not shown skills like that for his first few years.

Ellis should be a fantastic value in drafts this year, as I can only envision him taking the next step in his development. Though he is getting older (age 30), I believe that he will have another solid season at the plate for the A's. Look for him late in drafts, and enjoy the output he will provide you.

Other Second Base Values: Asdrubal Cabrera (Cleveland Indians), Howie Kendrick (Los Angeles Angels), Jose Lopez (Seattle Mariners)
