Fantasy Baseball Tip: Free Agents to Add to Your Team

Brian Munger
If you are playing fantasy baseball and are looking for a good addition from the waiver wire, then I suggest looking at the three following players.

Yovani Gallardo (Milwaukee Brewers)
Most people dropped him when he injured his ACL, as it was believed he would miss the rest of the season. The chance of him returning this season still seems extremely dim, but if you have an extra DL spot on your roster, I recommend picking him up just in case he does come back. He's proven that he can be very solid. Plus, the Brewers last man in their rotation is Dave Bush. Dave Bush has a mediocre E.R.A. of around 4.50, so given his numbers, I think it's safe to say that Bush will be quickly replaced by Gallardo if Gallardo returns. You also have to take into account that the Brewers are in the thick of the playoff race, which increases the chances of a return by Gallardo. If the Brewers were 15 games out of the wild card spot toward the end of the season, then the chances of Gallardo returning would be even more doubtful than they already are; however, with their current record, Gallardo would certainly be a welcome addition late in the season as they make their playoff run, as he currently has a career E.R.A of 3.38 and averages nearly one strikeout per inning. If I were a betting man, I would say that Gallardo will not return this season, but you really have nothing to lose if you put him on your DL.

Melky Cabrera (New York Yankees)
Cabrera had a strong start to the season. Heck, at one point, he even led the Yankees in homeruns. He has since dropped off considerably and many people have dropped him during the past month. His batting average is in the low .240's and his on base percentage is below .300, but don't give up on this guy. He still starts nearly every game in centerfield and he still has a cannon of an arm that Johnny Damon could never come close to replacing. Plus, Cabrera is still part of the most dangerous lineup in baseball. We all know that the Yankees typically wait during the latter part of the season to heat up with their bats, so pretty much any Yankee starter would be a good addition to your offensive bench during the late months of the season. Obviously, you will want to wait for him to heat up again before putting him in your starting lineup, but for now, I think he'd make a great benchwarmer on your team.

Marlon Byrd (Texas Rangers)
In the beginning of July, he had a miserable batting average of 0.233, but since then, he has gradually been lifting his numbers in an upward direction. His batting average is now about 20 points higher. He often hits between dangerous lefties, Josh Hamilton and David Murphy, so the opportunities will be plentiful. Plus, he plays in Texas and we all know Texas stays pretty damn warm during the entire summer, which means more balls flying out of the park and more high scoring games.
