Fantasy Football '09: Biggest Fantasy Busts

Who will be the biggest fantasy bust of the 2009 NFL season? There are lot of legit arguments and candidates, but among the top of that list are Marshawn Lynch and Roy Williams.

Lynch has proved himself to be a very productive fantasy running back during the past two seasons. Last reason, several NFL fans had him among their lists of top 10 fantasy running backs, but things will obviously be a little different for Lynch in 2009. The obvious reason is that he will be serving a three game suspension to begin the season due to a misdemeanor gun possession charge in Los Angeles back in March. Three games may not sound like a lot, but you have to remember that most "regular seasons" within fantasy leagues end in week 13 to allow time for a playoff tournament. With such a limited number of games, every week is precious. Lynch is guaranteed to miss the first three games and who knows how much he'll play when he returns. It's doubtful that the coach will throw him right into the mix with 30 touches in his first regular season game in nearly a year. Chances are, he'll be splitting carries with Fred Jackson in week 4, thus ultimately making that week a fantasy waste for Lynch, as well. Plus, you have to take into account the Buffalo Bills' bye in week 9. So add it all up, and Lynch is basically going to miss 5 out of 13 of your fantasy-regular season games. Can you afford that? Well, you probably can if you make him a 3^rd or 4^th running back, but drafting this guy as one of your top two running backs could prove to be a HUGE mistake! Don't do it, it's not worth it!

Roy Williams

Everybody automatically assumes that Roy Williams will have a HUGE year for Dallas now that drama queen, Terrell Owens is out of the picture. Williams will be a great addition to your roster of fantasy receivers, but don't count on him on being your #1 receiver. Even relying on Williams to be your #2 receiver could be a stretch. Until we see a proven chemistry between Tony Romo and Roy Williams, it is hard to say what will come of them. Last season, they played seven games together, during which time Williams scored ZERO touchdowns! Roy's only touchdown reception for Dallas came for the arm of their aged backup, Brad Johnson! In addition to a lack of touchdowns, Roy had a lack of receptions. During those seven games with Romo, Roy never had a game in which he caught more than three passes. In six of those games, he had less than 40 yards receiving. True, it takes a while to form a chemistry between a quarterback and receiver, but given the above average talents and abilities of these two guys, you'd think they could've connected for more positive results, especially given the fact that most of the defensive attention was focused on T.O. and Jason Witten.

Don't expect anything spectacular from Roy Williams in 2009. This season, you will most likely see Witten be the main man (probably with over 100 catches) and there will be a lot of short dump passes to Marion Barber and Felix Jones. Everything else will probably be an even split between Williams, Patrick Crayton, and Miles Austin. One might even make a bold, but possibly accurate, prediction in saying that Miles Austin will end up with better fantasy number than Williams. Romo loves looking for Austin on the deep routes. Roy is not the kind of guy that is going to burn 80 yarders for you . . . especially now that he appears a bit heavier than his days in Detroit.
