Fantasy Football 2009 Draft: Top 5 New Orleans Saints to Draft

Rolando Cruz
A fourth place finish and an 8-8 record is not what the New Orleans Saints were expecting from their 2008 season. Despite their dismal record, the Saints remain a team with a lot of talent on offense, which means that there are plenty of players for Fantasy Football owners to go after in a 2009 Fantasy Football Draft. Here then are the top 5 New Orleans Saint's players to take in your draft this year.

Drew Brees (QB):

Few fantasy quarterbacks could match the output of the prolific Brees last season. Drew came close to Dan Marino's NFL record for most yards passing in a season, throwing for 5,069 yards and 34 touchdowns last year. The season though was no fluke as Brees now has thrown for over 4,400 yards in all three season's he has played for the Saints. What's more, Brees has also thrown for at least 24 touchdowns in five straight seasons. Though he will not get you 5,000 yards this year, there is no reason to believe that Brees won't go over the 4,000 yards mark again, and throw for 25-30 TDs in the process. Rated as one of the elite Fantasy Football quarterbacks available this year, look for Brees to be gone in the top 2 rounds.

Marques Colston (WR):

Colston's 2008 numbers were tempered by an injury which kept him out a total of 6 games. Still, over the last 8 games of the season there were few better receivers in the league, as Colston racked up 42 catches for 678 yards and 5 TDs. Since the 6-4, 225 lbs receiver continues to be Brees favorite target, look for Colston to rebound and post numbers in the neighborhood of +85 catches, +1300 yards, and +10 touchdowns. In the midst of this offense, look for Marques to be an elite Fantasy Football receiver for the next few years.

Lance Moore (WR):

Moore made used of the injury to Colston to post up some pretty good numbers himself. Even after Colston's return to the lineup, Lance remained one of Brees' favorite targets, finishing the season with an 8 catch, 2 touchdown performances against the Lions. Though the 5-9 Moore will probably not get you another 10 touchdowns this season, a +75 catch, +900 yards season is not out of the question. Moore remains a valuable second or third receiver option in most Fantasy Football leagues.

Reggie Bush (RB):

Okay, so Bush has not lived up to the incredible amount of hype that preceded his 2006 rookie season. That does not make him a bad Fantasy Football option, especially in leagues were total number of receptions score you points. Despite missing 6 games to injuries last season, Bush still managed to post 844 yards from scrimmage along with 6 touchdowns, and 52 receptions. In just 38 games over the past 3 seasons, the former USC great has produced 3.149 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns, so what's not to like about him? He may never live up to the hype, but in most leagues, Bush can still be a solid #2 back.

Pierre Thomas (RB):

Even with a committee of running backs carrying the ball for them, the 2008 Saints ranked 28th in the NFL in rushing. This can hardly be blamed on Pierre Thomas, since Thomas made the best of the 129 chances he had to run with the ball, gaining 625 yards and 9 touchdowns on the ground, and adding another 284 yards and 3 touchdowns in receptions. What's more look, look for Thomas to get the ball in the red zone, which will add to his value. While he is probably not as good a Fantasy Football option as Reggie Bush, Thomas is nevertheless worth a late round pick.
