Fantasy Football 2010: Top 10 Quarterbacks to Draft

Rolando Cruz
While there is always a measure of luck in drafting the right players for key positions in Fantasy Football, drafting a good quarterback this year should be a virtual llock given that the 2009 football season saw 10 signal callers throw for over 4,000 yards and 18 pass for more than 20 touchdowns. So while you may not end up with a Peyton Manning or a Drew Brees this year, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to draft a quarterback who can still get you into the post season. Here then is a list of the 10 best available quarterbacks for the 2010 Fantasy Football season.

Peyton Manning

From a Fantasy Football perspective, Peyton Manning is still king. Manning has thrown for at least 26 touchdowns every year he has played in the league, and only twice has the Colt's quarterback missed the 4,000 yard plateau. Even with out Harrison and Gonzalez to throw to last season, Peyton still threw for 33 touchdowns and 4,500 yards during the regular season. What's more, after 192 regular season games, Manning has shown no signs of slowing down. If he is available he should be your top choice at quarterback this season.

Drew Brees

While there was very little chance he was going to pass for 5,000 yards again last season, Drew Brees nevertheless threw for over 4,000 yards for the fourth year in a row while adding another 34 touchdowns to his totals. By year's end his 109.6 QB Rating was tops in the NFL, and there is little reason to believe that Brees won't post another 4,000 yard, 30 TD season in 2010. If you can't get Manning, Brees is the next logical choice.

Aaron Rodgers

Will he ever make Packer fans forget Brett Favre, probably not. That said, Rodgers quietly put together another fantastic season last year proving that he was worth the first round draft pick the Packers spent on him in 2004. Fantasy Football wise Rodgers is an elite quarterback whose overall numbers place him close to Manning and Brees. Aside from throwing for 4,434 yards and 30 touchdowns last season (with only 7 interceptions), Rodgers also ran for 316 yards and 5 touchdowns. After two great years as a starter, Rodgers will not disappoint in 2010.

Philip Rivers

What's not to like about Phillip Rivers, the San Diego quarterback has now posted back to back seasons with a QB Rating over 104, while throwing for over 4,000 yards each year. Now that Tomlinson is no longer the focal point of the Chargers offense, there is no reason to believe that Rivers can't keep posting great fantasy numbers, especially with Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates to throw to. Look for another 4,000 yard performance from Rivers, and though he's not as popular a pick as Brady and Romo, look for him to deliver better numbers.

Tony Romo

Love him or hate him the Cowboy quarterback is still a fantastic Fantasy Football option, and last year Romo proved he could handle the pressure that comes with playing in December and into the playoffs. Steady as they come from a Fantasy Football point of view, Romo had 8 multiple touchdown games last season, along with 8 games in which he threw for over 300 yards. Overall his 4,483 yards passing ranked third in the NFL, and he has the corp. of receivers to deliver numbers in the same range this year.

Tom Brady

Brady will never get back to the Fantasy Football numbers he posted in 2007, but last season proved that he is back from the injury that sidelined him in 2008. Still an elite Fantasy Football QB, it should be noted that Brady has only once passed for over 30 touchdowns in his career. Numbers in the 3,850 yard, 25-28 touchdown range should be what you get from Brady this season.

Matt Schaub

A poor man's Drew Bree's, Matt Schaub was the Fantasy Football surprise of 2009, throwing for 4,770 yards and 29 touchdowns for a Texans team that won its last 4 games in a row. In the process Schaub had 4 games in which he threw for over 350 yards, and 2 games in which he passed for 4 touchdowns. Don't look for another career year from Schaub this season, though a 4,000 yard season is not out of the question.

Ben Roethlisberger

Inconsistency is the reason Big Ben is not ranked higher, that along with looming legal troubles. While the Pittsburgh QB had games in which he passed for 503 and 417 yards last season, Roethlisberger also had 2 games in which he failed to throw for at least 200 yards, and 7 games in which he threw less than 2 touchdowns. By season's end, Roethisberger will once again have good Fantasy stats, but how he gets there will have a great affect on your team.

Eli Manning

He will never be as good as his older brother when it comes to Fantasy Football, but Eli is nevertheless a top 10 Fantasy quarterback who is coming off a career year. Last season Manning threw for 4,021 yards and went over the 20 touchdown mark for the 5 year in a row. With the Giants showing great depth at receiver, look for Manning to hover around the 4,000 yard mark again this season, while adding about 25 touchdowns to his totals.

Brett Favre

Will he be back, or won't he? And if he does come back, how much will he have left in the tank after 289 NFL regular season games? Statistics wise, you can argue that Favre had a career year last season, when he posted a 107.2 QB Rating while throwing for 33 touchdowns. If he does come back you for one last season, look for numbers in the +3,700 yards, 20-22 touchdown range from this future Hall of Famer.
