Fantasy Football: 5 Buy-Low Players You Must Have

Rob S
5. Justin Fargas RB - A buy low candidate if there ever was one. With all the hype surrounding Darren McFadden in Oakland, don't expect many people (including those in your league) to take this guy seriously. However, when looking at McFadden's carries the past 3 weeks, they have been on a downward trend, from 21 against Kansas City in Week 2, to 7 last game against San Diego. With Fargas expected to be the feature back in Week 6, don't expect McFadden's numbers to rise. Although Fargas flew under the radar last season, he became a real fantasy commodity the final 4 games he played in, averaging over 107 yards per game rushing and scoring 3 times. Looking at Raider's remaining schedule, Fargas will be facing lowly rush defenses such as the Broncos, Chiefs, Dolphins, Saints, and Texans in the future. Don't expect Fargas to be the LT of 2008, but expect him to gather a solid amount of points for a 3rd running back or a flex position.

4. Calvin Johnson WR - Megatron got off to the start that many fantasy owners expected from him last season, but has accumulated only 56 yards and zero TDs the past 2 weeks. With pass defenses of Minnesota, Chicago, and Washington on the horizon for the Lions, Calvin Johnson owners will be willing to trade him for less than what he is worth. In Detroit there has been a lot of talk of Drew Stanton becoming the Lions starting QB within the next couple weeks and this should bode well for CJ. As a Spartan, I've seen the arm that Stanton had at Michigan State, and it is one that instantly make Johnson a very strong deep threat. Especially try to gather this sophomore if you are on pace to make the playoffs, as the Lion's final 3 matchups are against the Colts, Saints, and Packers (who he torched for 129 yards and 2 TDs in Week 2) respectively.

3. Kellen Winslow TE - With Cleveland's offense starting to finally show signs of life, expect Kellen Winslow to also. With Braylon Edwards compiling more drops than receptions, Winslow is becoming the Brown's go to receiver. With over 1100 yards a year ago, Winslow was a top five tight end draftee coming into the season. If you can swap him for a Anthony Fasano or Bo Scaife type player, do so, as Winslow should finish the season ranked far ahead of these guys. Winslow has no need to be traded for right this moment however, as the Brown's next 4 matchups are the Giants, Redskins, Jaguars, and Ravens. However after the Baltimore game, Kellen Winslow owners will be licking their chops at a very favorable schedule for the Browns pass game.

2. Steven Jackson RB - With over 200 yards rushing and receiving, it is clear that Steven Jackson is the main component of the Saint Louis offense. In fact every game since the start of the season has seen more Jackson yards than the previous, lastly with a 188 yard and 1 TD performance against what was an undefeated Buffalo team. Remember, a healthy Jackson in 2006 finished with over 1500 rushing yards, 800 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns. If Jackson can make close to that contribution to your team this year, expect him to finish the season as one of the top fantasy backs. Smart one for one swaps for Stephen Jackson would include Michael Turner, Reggie Bush, or Matt Forte.

1. Peyton Manning QB - With only 5 touchdowns in 4 games, Peyton Manning is currently riding a lot of fantasy owners' benches. Looking back into the past though, Peyton has never scored less than 26 touchdowns in a season, and that was in his rookie year. His current 79.2 passer rating is almost 20 points lower than it has been in any season since 2002. Look for a big game for Indianapolis in Week 6 against the Ravens to turn things around for Manning, Addai, and the rest of the Colts offense. If you can acquire Peyton for QBs such as Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, or Brett Farve, please do so, and reap the benefits come crunch time.
