Fantasy Football - What We Learned in Week 1

Already Regretting Your Draft Picks? Here's a Few Players that Might Help Save You!

Steven Michael
Just like every team in the NFL, we have high hopes for our fantasy football team. The couple weeks leading up to the first real weekend, all I here is confidence spewing. But the truth of the matter is only one team can win and most teams will be out of it by week 6. So, how do we go from thinking we are the champs, do wondering what the heck went wrong? The first thing is injuries: Ryan Grant - done, Matthew Stafford - 4-8 weeks, how you feeling that Colts defense now that Bob Sanders is done. But during week 1, people don't freak out too much about injuries, the real freak out comes from the realization that you may have overvalued players. Let's breakdown the players we may have overvalued this season:

C.J. Spiller - After a huge preseason, he was rising up the boards, how's 6 rushing and 8 receiving yards treating you. I have to admit, I was a little excited when I heard he was even getting the starting nod. I think I could gain 14 total yards against the dolphins, but sadly I wasn't picked this year.

Any Jet receiver - Let's just say the leading receiver had a whopping 18 yards. Now, I know they were playing the Ravens, but the Jet offense looked horrific at best. If you have a WR from the Jets, I would drop him now before he starts to infect the rest of your bench.

Jason Witten - This guy had the most yards without a touchdown last year, now he might not get any yards either. The way Romo tried to force the ball to everyone not named Witten makes you wonder if this top 5 TE might be in for a long year.

Kevin Kolb - I know a lot of people were thinking (including me)...same offense...same numbers. The Eagle offense looked stagnant against that Packer D (without Al Harris mind you). Not until Vick came in the game did the Eagle offense have any form of life. What made McNabb such a great fantasy QB were the big plays. I just don't think Kolb has the arm strength or maneuverability to be able to make those plays. I know he's young, but I see more promise out of Sam Bradford than I do Kolb.

If you happen to be starting any of these guys....I am really sorry, you might be the last place team this year. If you are a little unsure of your starting lineup, here's a few guys you may want to consider picking up in a hurry.

Brandon Lloyd (WR - Den) - I know a lot of people were high on Jabar Gaffney (really??) and Eddie Royal, but Lloyd quietly had 5 catches for 117 yards to lead the team. Lloyd is a reliable receiver with good hands and just enough speed to be dangerous. Look out for this guy in future weeks, especially since Denver most likely will be playing catch up this season.

Brandon Jackson (RB - Packers) - This is an obvious choice because Ryan Grant is out for the year. He filled in nicely with 18 carries for 63 yards. By no means do I expect him to become a Top 10 running back, but he is definitely worth a number 2 spot.

Legedu Naanee (WR - SD) - I was high on him coming into the season and he didn't do anything to disappoint in the opener. He wasn't even on many people's draft boards and he was below Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd. But Naanee is taking over for Vincent Jackson and has good hands. At 6'2 220lbs, he's not small either. Give him one more week and he'll be the new go to guy since Gates will be double and triple teamed.

Mark Clayton (WR - Rams) - I can't believe I am actually recommending anyone on St. Louis not named Jackson, but Mark Clayton came out of the gate hot with 100+ yards and 10 catches. The Arizona defense aren't chumps and Sam Bradford seemed to have a good re pour with Clayton. Someone is going to get the yards and it looks like Clayton will be the guy.

I know it's week 1 and you can't be any worse than 0-1, but make moves before that leak turns into a flood and your season is over. Look for my weekly fantasy updates...
