Bipolar disorder is a mental illness. A person with bipolar disorder may feel invincible one day and deeply depressed a week later.
What is a manic cycle like?
When my friend enters a manic cycle, she starts off being very optimistic, excited, and highly productive. As the cycle continues, she becomes agitated. She has sent emails to myself and her other friends accusing us of various slights. However, when she exits the manic cycle, she returns to her sweet self and no longer believes any of us have tried to hurt her feelings.
What is a depression cycle like?
Following a manic cycle, my friend enters a depression. Sometimes it is a mild depression that lasts a few weeks. Sometimes it lasts for months. She has told me that she has trouble sleeping during these times.
Are there treatments for bipolar disorder?
There are a variety of treatments available. The most important thing a person with bipolar disorder can do is admit they need help and ask for it.
How can I cope with bipolar disorder?
You and your loved ones should watch for signs that you are entering a manic or depressive cycle. If you are about to cycle, discuss it with your doctor and loved ones. They can help support you through the episode.
What can a friend or family member do when a person is in a manic cycle?
Do not antagonize a person who is in a manic phase. If the person is agitated or aggressive, do not argue with them about anything. Once the manic cycle winds down, you will be able to discuss whatever was bothering either of you.
What can a friend of family member do when a person is in a depression cycle?
The best thing you can do is listen. Sometimes just being heard is enough to get your loved one through this phase. Never blame yourself for your loved one's sadness.
Can a person with bipolar disorder work?
A person with bipolar disorder can work in any field they like. The Americans with Disabilities act protects people with bipolar disorder from discrimination. If you need special arrangements in order to do your job, your employer may be required to provide them for you.
Can a person with bipolar disorder be an effective parent?
A person with bipolar disorder can be a good parent. A person who is managing their bipolar disorder can be a source of inspiration to their children. My friend is a very creative person, which I've found to be true of all of the people I have met who have bipolar disorder. This creativity can make for some fun childhood experiences.
What should you tell your friends and family if you are diagnosed with bipolar disorder?
Tell them the truth. Chances are good that they are already aware you are silently dealing with something. They will appreciate your honesty and will want to help you. Make sure to share with them that bipolar disorder is just something you have. It doesn't define you as a person.
