Questions and Answers
If I am allergic to latex paint can I use latex paint?
Yes. Latex paint doesn't actually contain latex rubber. "Latex" is only used to describe the paint as it is rubbery in texture. People with latex allergies are allergic to natural rubber, and latex paint contains a combination of polyvinyl with acrylic resin. There is no natural rubber in latex paint.
How can I get clean latex paint off the floor once it has dried?
Latex paint can be removed easily off floor by pouring a little rubbing alcohol over the area and covering it with plastic wrap to prevent evaporation. Wait a while; you will see the paint start to break up. The latex paint will wipe off easily with a sponge or rag at this point.
Can I use latex paint over an oil based paint?
Sure! Just make sure you have thoroughly cleaned the area, and have sanded it down enough. You always have to sand before priming so the paint will adhere.
Is latex an oil based paint, or a water based paint?
Latex paint is a water based paint.
Does latex paint contain lead?
Up until 1990, when mercury was banned by the U.S. E.P.A. about 30% of latex paints contained lead. New interior latex paint does not contain lead. However, if you have old cans of latex paint lying around, they could contain lead and mercury! If you do find old cans of paint that needs to be disposed of, call your local paint store for advice on how, and where to dispose safely.
How should I store latex paint?
I advise that you paint the top of the lid with a streak of the color paint on the top of the lid, so you know exactly what is in the can! To store latex paint wipe off the rim and put the lid on to store. If you don't wipe the rim, it will stick when you go to open it next time! Make sure the lid is on tightly. If the lid is not on tightly, the paint will thicken and dry out. Turn the can upside down so no air gets it.
Why is the surface I painted sticky?
If your painted wall is sticky or tacky it could be because you didn't prepare the surface correctly before painting. Always take your time sanding and priming before you paint. A little preparation goes along way.
How long is the drying time for interior latex paint?
Depending on the temperature (not too humid, or too cold) the drying time for interior latex paint is about one hour for it to be dry to the touch. You can apply a second coat in about four hours.
What kind of brush should I use when using interior latex paint? Natural or synthetic? What about rollers?
Because latex paint is water based, a natural brush will 'frizz up' a natural brush (like our hair in the humidity) so a synthetic brush is best. Same thing applies to roller covers. Use a synthetic roller cover for applying interior latex paint.
