Far from Being Rich!

John Smither
We are far from being monetarily rich

Reflecting on this as we sit in the dark

We have come here to this place

It may be madness; equally it may be with good reason

We felt it was now or never, so now's the time

Else we may be left thinking what if? Each and every night

As we awaken from another night

Make fresh coffee, beans roasted rich

In this new life we have plenty of time

Each fresh day an equal split, 'tween light and dark

Fresh coffee, #1 good reason

To come here to this place

As we adjust to this new place

Slow paced, new sounds each night

Power cut, for no sound reason

New neighbors, many poor, a few rich

Some issues we are kept in the dark

We're the new arrivals, this will change over time

Just now is not the time

To place our mark on this place

Into somewhere new, away from the dark

Light emerges from the tunnel that is night

We are here for the fun, to enjoy life, not get rich

Have ourselves some fun; write a little, good reason

It is a good life we have for ourselves here, within reason

This is ours, now is the time

Living well, just like we are rich

Hard work got us here to this place

So when we sleep each night

All good dreams, nothing dark

As I lay here listening in the dark

To the unfamiliar sounds around me, trying to reason

What creature is that of the night?

Not enough light to check the time

How long until dawn beckons in this place

Life experiences, knowledge gained, how can I not on these feel rich?

With my experience of life I feel rich, full of life's light, with little or no dark

We are here having found our new place, and with good reason

To be happy, for it is our time and to fear not the creatures of the night

I had often felt that I had a book inside me ready to be written (many of us have I know), well it has been but now I need to get it published. Until recently I never knew I could write poems, that is my nex...  View profile

I love the idea that you've created a time to be happy, and not to live in fear, as expressed in your last line. Soak it in. You ARE living in riches there, and money is a very small part of it. The concept is inspiring.

Henry David Thoreau expressed the excellent thought that the best way to make yourself wealthy is to want for little.

Interesting poem. Captivating the darken mood are thoughts take when dark settles in, but also the accepting mood that begin to reason things out when sleep begins to usher in. Another day another reason to be grateful. You count your successes and your riches by the happiness and quality of life you live. Have faith!

You should like a rich man to me, John. You just have a better understanding of life is about than some. Wonderful read.
