For many in the Carthage, MO area, October 4th was a fun- filled day as they stepped into the past and enjoyed a taste of what life was like years ago.

October 4th 2008 was the first Farm Girl Fest in Red Oak, II. This was a fun filled day for all who came. As you enter Red Oak II, you feel as though you have just stepped a hundred years into the past. This lovely little town has everything you would expect to see in a small country town from years gone by.

Farm Girl Fest Activities:

There was something for everyone at Farm Girl Fest. Visitors enjoyed watching a lady make glass beads. There was a man demonstrating how to cook a meal in a Dutch oven over hot coals. As well as free hayride that delighted guests young and old alike. Everyone enjoys a hayride but riding through an old time town while enjoying the soothing sounds of music being played on a dulcimer has a way of making it all the more special.

Food and Drinks:

Booths galore filled the little town of Red Oak II on October 4th. There were food booths in which you could purchase a snack or dinner. Cotton candy, popcorn, cookies, fresh baked breads, BBQ beef and fried egg rolls were among the many foods offered.

No need to worry about becoming thirsty while walking the streets of this old town. A young boy with a basket of cold drinks was usually near by just in case anyone wanted something cold to drink. Small town hospitality was a live and well at Red Oak II as everyone enjoyed the sites and atmosphere.

Fun for Everyone:

From crafts to games, Farm Girl Fest was sure to please. There were craft,s gift ideas, skin care, candles, Home and garden booths among others. Food, crafts, games and live music. Yes, there was truly something for everyone.

My Favorite Booth:

One of the coolest booths that day was a booth that had soy candles. These candles were soy candles and hand lotion all in one. You simply light the candle then dip your finger in the melted wax and massage into your skin. I was amazed the wax was not hot and did not feel like any wax I had ever felt before. Massaging this onto the skin leaves your skin feeling soft and silky with a hint of whatever scent you choose.

The lady that ran the booth explained that she makes these candles herself, which always makes it even cooler in my mind. She had a variety of scents including some that were made with Victoria secret perfume. Now talk about special! This booth had other gift ideas as well but nothing that stood out as much as those delightful candles.

Games:

Everyone enjoyed the games. Games included such things as spinning a wheel for a prize, picking a plastic duck from the duck pond for a price, sumo wrestling to a beanbag toss. All games were inexpensive with nice prizes. The duck pond was .25 cents a try and a prize every time. These prizes were perfect for very young children, as were the prizes for spinning the wheel.

Sumo wrestling was something for youngsters or those who are young at heart and wanted to have a little silly fun. It was fun to watch as two players would put on a suit made of three colorful inner tubes and then push and wrestle to get the other player off the mat first.

Precious Moments Indeed:

Precious moment's items were the prizes for the beanbag toss. This was fun for all ages with amazing plush animal prizes including a super soft lamb that also makes a great pillow, a teddy bear, a duck or a pig. All prizes were precious moments and really soft.

The cost of the beanbag toss was one dollar for three tries. Everyone was a winner at this game. The consolation prize for those who did not get a beanbag in the ramps whole won either a duck or a pig. In order to win a lamb or teddy bear you only needed to get one bag in the whole.

Everywhere you looked, you could see someone walking around with precious moments plush animals in their arms. These items were brand new top quality precious moments plush items. There was also a nice gift basket filled with precious moment's items. The gift basket was filled with figurines and other gift items and was being raffled off at the cost of $2.00 per ticket.

Animals:

The petting zoo was small but the children enjoyed it. This year there were only goats and rabbits. However, the kids did not seem to mind. They were getting to see and touch real farm animals. After petting them if your young one happened to fall in love with a bunny, they did have the option of purchasing one.

As always, there were ducks, gunnies and other birds to be seen at red oak as well as a solid white peacock. There is just something special about walking through an old time town and getting to watch the ducks in the duck pond as well as seeing them walk down the streets of town.
