The very first thing you should do is join an "Add Me" group on Facebook for Farm Town friends. This is going to give you more neighbors, and potentially a revenue stream of gifts daily. Besides that, some Farm Town Neighbors only rely on their neighbors for harvesting. This in and of itself is a good revenue stream, but very time consuming.
Before you even begin with your own farm, you need a little 'bit more revenue than your starting money - even with the daily lottery. Go to the market place, and strike up a conversation with someone. Chat about the weather in your home town, or why you like Farm Town. Do not spam "hire me!" a hundred times. This is one of my first, and possibly most important Farm Town Tips. Spammers get ignored, and that hurts your revenue potential.
If you are polite and friendly, you will most likely be hired relatively quickly to harvest for someone. When you get to their farm, ask what they would like harvested, and ask if they want their trees harvested. Do NOT begin until you have instructions. You will get hired back if you do what they want, and ignored if you don't.
When you have Harvested for one or two people, you should have sufficient funds to begin your own Farm in Farm Town. Now change your settings to remove the gaps in between plots, and plow your entire field. Purchase only grapes, and plant them all. While you are waiting 4 hours, go do homework, talk on the phone, take a walk, read other Farm Town Tips sights, or just take a nap. If you are going to be gone longer than 8 hours, don't plant anything - unless you will be gone for longer than 20 hours.
When 4 hours have passed, go to the Market Place (or to one of your new neighbors who are online) and hire them to harvest your field. You will build more money per plot, and they will get a percentage of each plot. This will not lower your revenue in any way, so it is important to do this whenever you are harvesting.
Plant and Harvest Grapes exclusively until level 11, even though it may appear to gain you more revenue from some of the more expensive crops. If you would like detailed information on why this is the most effective plot for Experience and Money, click on Farm Town Tips to read my breakdown. If you are going to be away for longer than 8 hours, but less than 20, do not plant anything!
At Level 11, only buy and plant Raspberries. These will double your earnings and experience growth. Every Two Hours you will be having someone else harvest and replanting. If you will be gone from 4-8 hours, plant Grapes, and if you will be gone longer, again - don't plant anything.
These Farm Town Tips will provide you with the most revenue and experience the absolute fastest. This will allow you to buy bigger farms, which will in turn allow you more freedom in designing the ultimate Farm Town farm.
For inspiration in designing a farm, look through cross stitch books, or beading loom pattern books for nice, square patterns. Otherwise, use barns, water, and more to design what you want your Farm Town to look like! When you get presents, save them for now until you have the largest farm possible. Then use them to aid in decorating!
