Milk Recalled for Possible Health Risks

Farmers All Natural Creamery has issued a recall for approximately 1,000 gallons of milk distributed in the states of Colorado, Texas and Illinois due to the likelihood that some of the milk had not been pasteurized properly and poses a health risk. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship issued the recall on October 7, 2011. The affected milk has an expiration date of October 22, 2011.

The recalled milk was processed at the Farmers All Natural Creamery located in Wellman, Iowa and was sold to four main distributors: UNFI in Aurora, Colorado; UNFI in Lancaster, Texas; Natural Brands in Wood Dale, Illinois; and Calma Optimal in Franklin Park, Illinois. The recall has been issued through the Food and Drug Administration; at this point, an official statement regarding the recall has not been placed on the official website.

The recalled milk was manufactured on October 3, 2011 and each gallon has an expiration date of October 22, 2011 as well as the plant number #19-888 printed on the container. Those who have purchased the milk are advised to return it to the place of purchase or dispose of it.

Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to warn the public regarding the dangers of raw, unpasteurized milk. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has an extensive questions and answer site in which they discuss the risks associated with drinking raw milk, as well as the process of pasteurization. According to the CDC, drinking raw milk can cause a person to be sickened with a food borne illness and a variety of bacteria such as:

  • Listeria
  • Escherichia Coli (E. Coli 0157)
  • Shigella
  • Yersinia
  • Norovirus
  • Brucella
  • Campylobacter
Pasteurization is the process of heating raw milk to temperatures that are very high, ensuring that bacteria, germs and parasites are killed. Pasteurization began in the early 20s and by 1950 became routine practice. Government health officials highly advocate staying away from raw milk and drinking pasteurized in order to reduce your risk of exposure to dangerous bacteria, germs and parasites. Though the recall for Farmers All Natural Creamery did not center on raw milk, the recall has been issued due to faulty pasteurization processes.
