Farmers Markets in Detroit, Michigan

The farmers market can provide the fresh fruits and vegetables you need to eat healthy. And there are several farmers markets to choose from in the Metro Detroit area. Here is what you need to know about three of these farmers markets.

Detroit's Historic Eastern Market: Head to Detroit's Historic Eastern Market area near downtown and you'll find a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables as well as flowers. You'll enjoy the sights and sounds that fill the air as busy shoppers peruse the wide selection. There are sections in the Eastern Market for flowers and green plants and other sections for vegetables. Some of the farmers will let you taste a bit of their product so you can make an informed purchase about the quality of the fruit or vegetable. The prices are reasonable at the Detroit's Historic Eastern Market and are not always set in stone. See if you work a deal out with the farmer if you purchase in large qualities.

If you want to get the best fruit, vegetable and plant selection at the Detroit Eastern Market, arrive early. On any given Saturday 45,000 Detroiter and suburban residents flock to the market. It also helps to arrive early to get a good parking spot. Parking can get really right on busy Saturday mornings. The closer in your can park, the less distance you'll have to walk to load up your car with all of your great farmers market purchases.

The Detroit's Historic Eastern Market is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Saturday. The market is closed Sunday except for special events. It is between Gratiot, Mack Ave., St. Aubin and the I-75 service drive.

Royal Oak Farmers Market: This farmers market incorporates the country feel within the landscape of the city. You'll see a variety of people shopping at the Royal Oak Farmers Market for Michigan grown produce. Many of the vendors grow what they sell so they can insure the quality of their produce. On some occasions you can also purchase handmade crafts at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

There are 340 free parking spots available during the farmers market hours. There is also metered marking available. Arrive early and consider dining in one of the shops for breakfast before starting a day of shopping. The best thing about the Royal Oak Farmers Market is that it is open all year around.

Royal Oak Farmers Market is open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays May - Christmas; 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays April - December; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. January through March; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays for the antiques and collectibles. The Royal Oak Farmers Market is at 316 E 11 Mile Rd, Royal Oak, MI 48067.

Plymouth Farmers Market: This farmers market prides itself on the freshness of its fruits and vegetables as well as the taste. The Plymouth Farmers Market includes about 30 vendor stalls under a roof. There are also other vendors outside of the roof area. Among the selection are fruits, vegetables, baked goods and garden crafts. Most of the vendors are Michigan farmers. The Plymouth Chamber of Commerce runs the market.

The Plymouth Farmers Market hours are 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday May through October. The market is at The Gathering across from the Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth.
