Farmville is Addicting

Katie Sharp-Dierks
If you use Facebook, you've likely been invited to use the application Farmville. Farmville is a game where anyone can be a farmer. You can choose to have an orchard, grow a field full of crops, and even raise livestock. It's a lot of fun, and a great diversion. Unfortunately, Farmville on Facebook can be incredibly addicting.

When you plant crops on Farmville, they have a set growing time. Certain crops take longer to grow than others. After the crops have grown, you have the amount of time it took for them to grow before you must harvest them. So if you plant strawberries, which take four hours, then you have until eight hours after you plant them to harvest them. If you plant potatoes, which take three days, you have six days before they will wilt. If you don't harvest them in time, they wither away, and you lose out on the coins you spent buying the seeds, as well any profit from the plant.

Neighbors play a role on your Farmville farm. Your neighbors fertilize your crops which gains both them and you extra experience points. They gain a few coins for fertilizing your crops also. Neighbors also send you gifts. You can use these gifts on your farm, or you can sell them for extra coins. Recently, Farmville added the ability for your neighbors to feed your chickens as well.

If you choose to only farm trees and animals, then nothing will happen if you forget to come back to harvest them. Farmville trees and animals will wait for you! However, your friends will not be able to fertilize them, with the exception of feeding your chickens!

Playing Farmville on Facebook can be very addicting when you get into the game. Soon, you'll be making excuses to get online to check on your crops, or to milk your cows. You'll adopt lost animals that your friends find on their farms, until you find you have a menagerie of pets and livestock. Unfortunately, you probably have better things to do with your time.

Soon, you'll be looking for support groups to help you break your Farmville addiction. You'll wonder if there is such a thing as Facebook Farmville Anonymous. If there isn't, then there should be. Can anyone help me? I think I'm addicted.

Good article! I don't think a lot of people realize the game can be addicting until its too late. Hopefully, this helps bring awareness to farmville addiction.

I quit playing Farmville because every time I get a minute into the game, it pops up and says "Saving..." and then freezes. So I haven't been back to it in months.
