One of the first things mothers can do is examine their children's closets to see what kind of clothing they already have. Ever since my daughter was born, people have been giving her clothes. Some of the clothes she received more than two years ago are just starting to fit her. Once a mother knows what's in the closet, they can see what they need to purchase. In my case, I always have to buy pants and shoes.
Once an assessment of what clothing, shoes and accessories children need has been made, go over the family's budget to see how much can be set aside to get the necessary items. Most families now have to stretch a dollar a lot further than in past years, so mothers may not be able to purchase all the items on the list at one time. Maybe set aside a certain amount every paycheck that is designated for purchasing things for the children.
Then, mothers should avoid the pricey boutiques in their area. Although the clothes may be cute and you begin picturing your little one in a particular outfit, walk away. Some of these places charge as much as $100 for an article of clothing. If you don't have that kind of money, it doesn't make any sense to pay that much on something that they may outgrow in a few months. Places like Target and Old Navy have reasonable prices and quality merchandise for children of any age. Many cities also have consignment shops and gently used clothing stores that have a wide selection of children's clothing.
Discover the possibilities of online shopping. I have to be honest. Until less than a year ago, I never considered buying clothing on the Internet. After prices kept creeping up, however, I have been comparing prices on many clothing websites to find deals on merchandise. Places like Overstock.com, Zappo.com and Amazon.com have discounts sometimes as low as 75 percent on name brand items. This is nice for someone like me who refused to buy a 5-year-old child shoes and clothes that cost more than it costs to purchase grocery. There are other sites where mothers can comparison shop.
Finally, don't be too proud to take hand-me-downs. Some parents get embarrassed if someone passes clothes, shoes and accessories on to them. It would be a shame to refuse something for your child just because you think that your child should only have new things. Personally, I feel that, if the clothing, shoes and accessories are in good condition, I am grateful. The only items of clothing I will refuse are underwear that has been worn by another person.
Moms on a budget can still keep their children well dressed even when the money is tight. The guidelines mentioned above can help them map out a plan to make sure their children have the clothing, shoes and accessories they need.

Great advice. I always loved getting hand me downs or tried and true goodwill and garage sale clothes. Half the clothes you buy new fall apart the first time you wash them.
Great advice. I do most of my shopping at consignment sales for my boys, they grow too fast and get too dirty for new clothes.
I love consignment stores.
My daughter found a really nice thrift shop in her area. The people around her are well off and she always finds designer clothes in there dirt cheap!
Excellent tips! Thank you!
Great fashion advice. :-)
