Fashion and Food Go Together like Waffles and Stillettos

The Food Revolution in Fashion

Linda StCyr
Everyone loves food. Even the fashion industry. Although, the fashion world is often critizied for showing ultra thin, ultra tall models the newest move in fashion is to include food. Perhaps, this is due to the world becoming more eco-conscious or perhaps this is just another way to get people to take notice.

Food fashion has been around since before Lady Gaga appeared at the 2010 VMA's in her meat dress. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have done a variety of fashion shows featuring animal-free clothes and often some type of vegetable. One memorable outfit was a bikini made entirely out of lettuce leaves. The Lettuce Ladies offer a how to guide for making your own lettuce bikini on their website.

Chocolate as a fashion statement is getting hotter in the industry. For the past few years both Le Salon Du Chocolate in France and The New York City Chocolate Show in New York have kicked off their love of chocolate with haute couture chocolate fashions. The trend which started in Paris in 1995 has crossed borders with Russian, Italy, Japan, China and Egypt hosting their own chocolate fashion shows. Hats, dresses, shirts and corsets have all been made from different types of chocolate to create fashionable art. If you've got a sweet tooth and like fashion, check out these photos of some of the coolest chocolate fashions to hit the runway.

Photographer Ted Sabrese has made a name for himself by photographing food fashions. In an art series titled "Hunger Pains", Sabrese, shot models in the food they were craving the most. One model is draped in a gown made of artichoke hearts, another looks sleek and casual in a bread suit complete with handbag, and another model stands in an almost swagger like posture wearing waffle pants and a banana vest. The artichoke hearts dress was made by designers Daniel Feld and Wesley Nault, two graduates of 'Project Runway', a show that seeks out the next best fashion designer.

Other food fashion designers include chocolate dress maker Joelle Mahoney, costume designer Mia Gyzander who created a red and green cabbage gown for Cloris Leachman to wear in PETA ad, costume maker Ami Goodheart who created a rump roast petal skirt for Sabrese's "Hunger Pains", and artist Will Cotton who painted Katy Perry partially covered with cotton candy for her latest album has designed a dress made out of rock candy.

Interesting article! I love the title! I cannot envision myself in a lettuce bikini -- but I bet my husband could! Hee! :)

There is something decadent about this, if not just plain old icky. With models being "models" for anorexia, then to stir food into the mix, food that will not be eaten, and then to call the whole thing "Hunger Pains"?

I never thought of food as clothes. Hmmm...maybe wearing food is better for your waistline:)
