The Zeitgeist: Spring 2011 Trends in Jewelry

Penny Laine
Trendy accessories for the Spring 2011 season are the ones that make the biggest statement. Remember that old saying "less is more"? Well it does not apply this season. Stacking jewelry is going to be extremely popular - the more the better and the bigger the better. Huge statement rings, earrings, and bib necklaces are going to be seen all over fashionistas.

Geode Jewelry
Crystals and gems are already starting to appear in costume jewelry rings and necklaces. By the time spring rolls around, geode jewelry is going to be at the top of every fashionista's must have jewelry list. Look for jagged cuts of gemstones and not the typical smoothed, sanded ones with rounded edges. Check out the Tabasco geode necklace from the Smithsonian Museum Store for $180 which is a smaller, classy piece that you could wear to work every day. Free People carries a gorgeous Crystal Crater Ring for $158 that makes a huge statement measuring at almost 2 inches across at the largest part of the stone.

Your best bet to find a piece of geode jewelry that suits your taste and budget is to check out the selection on Etsy. A assortment of independent sellers/designers ensures you a wide selection of jewelry to find something that fits your style and budget. You can find a variety of crystal and gem geode jewelry including necklaces, pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets, and brooches. My favorite Etsy seller of geode jewelry is Sarah Lewis Jewelry, she has some really beautiful and unique pieces that are to die for!

Feather Jewelry
Funky jewelry like feather earrings have been rapidly gaining popularity. Many Etsy sellers have been selling feather earrings for a while now, but in the spring they are really going to start popping up everywhere. One of my favorite feather earring designers is Owlita. They carry really bold, pheasant feather earrings that are long enough to brush your shoulders. Some of their designs are bright and colorful and some of them are toned down and neutral. They are priced around $100 a pair, but are also sold as single earrings. These beauties have already been seen on celebrities such as Kim Cattrall in Sex and the City II, Vanessa Williams, Lucy Hale on "Pretty Little Liars", and Amber Stevens on "Greek".

Etsy seller Beth Nouveau sells similar designs as Owlita. This shop also carries different types of feathered items such as earrings, hair clips/hair extensions, and necklaces. The prices are a bit more affordable with earrings around $15-20 for the trendy gal on a budget.

Industrial Jewelry
Expect to see a lot of metal, spikes, and studs this spring. Alexander McQueen has skull drop earrings with a spike on the end for $285. Tarina Tarantino has a starchild multicolored spike necklace for $354.

The most edgy industrial jewelry trend that I have seen for the Spring 2011 season are crystal-spiked shoe harnesses from Indecorous Taste. I first saw these on widely admired fashion blogger Gala Darling and I haven't been able to get them out of my head. These shoe harnesses are one of the best accessories for Spring 2011 because they combine two of the biggest trends for the season. They are sure to turn many heads.

Stacked and Tangled Chains
Remember how upsetting it used to be to get a kink in your necklaces or for them to become tangled? Well hopefully you didn't throw all of your knotted necklaces away because it is now very fashionable to have a mass of twisted jewelry around your wrist or neck. Dannijo has designed multiple jewelry items using this tangled design such as the Tasmin Cuff which costs $670. Erickson Beamon has created a similar twisted cuff called the Glenda Cuff. At $475 this bracelet twists together crystal, pearl, rhinestone, and a gold chain - very extravagant and very en vogue for spring.

If you want to try the do-it-yourself approach for one of these necklaces, check out the Monoxious Guide to making a Tom Binns Safety Pin Necklace.

Even if you choose not to tangle your jewelry together, stacking bangles with other bracelets, multiple rings, and multiple necklaces will also be very popular for the upcoming season.

Remember, The Zeitgeist of Spring 2011 is all about making a statement when it comes to jewelry. Choose bold pieces and don't be afraid to stack up your accessories or shy away from vibrant colors!
