Fashion Forwardness in 2011

Forging a Trail in My Wardrobe for the Coming Year

Elle Hunt
As always when the New Year rolls around, it is time once again for that holiday tradition of resolutions. Why on earth do we make these stupid promises to ourselves at this time of year and why is it so celebrated? Do we not make promises to ourselves throughout the year anyway? What is so special about December 31st that we have to make a special promise at this time?

I have no idea, but whatever the reason I, like so many other people in this universe make a special promise to ourselves for the rest of the year whether it is to loose a certain amount of weight by next Christmas or saving up for that special present at year's end. We make ridiculous promises to ourselves and in the spirit of the season we believe that we are going to keep them. But here is one resolution I am determined to keep and that is regarding fashion. No matter how many times I tell myself I'm going to venture out of my comfort zone and wear a skirt this year, maybe even a dress. I never do it. Yes I try these staples on at the store but I always make up excuses to not purchase what could be a very good investment in my wardrobe for the coming year because I am just not comfortable buying and wearing what I'm not used to.

I don't know what it is about this new year though, but I am determined to buy at least three never before seen in my wardrobe staples this year and I will love and wear them until they fall off my body from being run through the washing cycle one too many times. Or I will die trying. The first is:

1)A warm winter jacket-I never buy these or if I do it ends up hanging in my closet feeling sad and lonely because yes I do think even our clothes have feelings...don't laugh. I either end up buying the coat because I like the color or I like the style. I never research to find out what style of jacket fits my body type. If I had I probably would wear it season after season. If there is one thing I have learned it is to do your research before going out into the mobs of people in shopping centers. You have to find out what color of coat suits your complexion or if you just don't care you can always get black and what style fits your body because no matter what you think not every coat will look good on your body. You have to determine what body shape you are and find the right coat that hugs and/or enhances your curves.

2)Leggings-I never really got why leggings were so popular. I tried wearing them with a too short skirt because that was the only way I was going to wear a too short skirt. It didn't work out. The top part where the leggings come together always rubbed against my thighs and caused friction, maybe I just needed to lose weight I reasoned, and they were just too hot. Or maybe I just run hot in body temperature. Maybe on really cold days I could wear them, but my good old jeans served me just fine. But I will in this next year determine to venture out in black opaque leggings...for at least one day.

3)High heels-- Even though they hurt my feet like nothing else, like leggings I will forge ahead of the pain because beauty really is pain right? And yes even though I am tall already I will be even taller and even though my feet are big already I will find heels to put them in that are sexy and at least 3 inches high. Stacked heels do not count because I have worn stacked heels before and this is all about trying something new right?

These are my three personal fashion resolutions for the coming year. Out of all of these, I think I will try hardest to wear heels in 2011. After all, I am a woman and heels are made for us. I have to embrace my inner sexiness sometime.
