Fashion Hauls: New Social Media Trend in Fashion

Alexandra Morgan
In the last year or so the fashion industry has really made strides in the social media forum; one of the latest of these is fashion hauls. If you've never heard of the term fashion haul, I'm not surprised, I just found out about it myself in the last few days; it seems to be a craze with the tweens and early twenty somethings though. Essentially a fashion haul is a five to ten minute video recorded detailing of fashion items recently purchased.

What is a Fashion Haul? Where Can Fashion Hauls Be Found?

As stated above, a fashion haulis a video recorded detailing of fashion items recently purchased; this basically covers where each item was purchased, for how much money, a show and short blurb on the detailing/style of each item, and why each piece was chosen.

A good portion of the YouTubehauls are devoted to stores like Forever21 and Bakers Shoes, where women can save money and still find a fashion gem. Fashion right now is all about the affordably fabulous so this is very much in keeping with the current fashion climate.

Fashion hauls can be found on YouTube and various other fashion blogs or vlogs (video blogs); and if you are so inclined to check any out, you'll quickly see that there are indeed favorite haulers, cliques, and followings to this new niche group of YouTubers.

What is a Fashion Haul? A Good Fashion Haul vs. a Bad Fashion Haul

If you spend a few moments watching three or four fashion hauls, you'll become painfully aware that most girls simply do not have video personalities and should not be attempting a haul.

So, what constitutes a good haul then? A good hauler should have a lively and charismatic personality, she should be excited about her purchases and even more thrilled to tell you about them, she should be organized, well-spoken, and have a clear set of talking points to cover.

A bad haul is excruciating to watch, some of the worst don't make eye contact with the camera, have no idea what they want to say, and frankly seem bored by their own statements.

What is a Fashion Haul? Fashion Hauls, Their Place in the Industry

Fashion hauls are blowing the doors to the fashion industry wide open for young women. It is no longer necessary to know someone to get a position at a fashion magazine, no longer even necessary to be able to write; fashion hauls serve as a young woman's portfolio and ticket into the industry. The entire industry (fashion PR, designers, and magazines/blogs) is turning away from print and veering more toward vlogging so a strong set of fashion hauls could help land an aspiring fashionista anywhere she wants to go.

What is a Fashion Haul? Conclusion

It's hard wading through all the really bad fashion hauls to get to one or two good ones, but the good ones can really give some great tips and ideas on shopping and money saving. One of my favorite haulers is Vera Sweeney of Lady and the Blog; she's a refreshing mature respite from the teeny bopper haulers out there and she's got a good sense of style. You can check her hauls out here on Lady and the Blog.

All in all, I'd say fashion hauls are worth a peek, and the good ones serve as a great virtual shopping buddy.

Wow, I'm surprised I've never heard of those or seen one on the blogs I follow. Great article, very interesting! Sounds like something I would have loved to do right out of high school when I could still afford to really go shopping!
