Fashion Mistakes to Avoid After Weight Loss

Dr. Jamie Yvette
You've achieved your personal weight loss goals and at this point in your life, you feel better than ever. Family, friends and coworkers compliment you on how much you've slimmed down and are quick to ask, "What's your secret?" With your new look and newfound confidence, just about anything seems possible!

Although you have every right to feel good about your weight loss, there are a few fashion faux pas that you risk making if you don't give your wardrobe careful consideration. And it is likely that even if you commit these fashion mistakes and other people notice, they will not say anything to you directly about it.

Fashion Mistake #1: Bearing Too Much Too Soon

The sexy new you may secretly desire to run naked through the streets and show off your new body to the world. This is best kept as a fantasy. Not only are there legal implications for streaking if you get caught (and nine times out of ten, you will get caught), but the world may just not be ready for such a sight.

The reality is that your body could probably stand some major toning - particularly if you've lost a great deal of weight in a relatively short period of time. According to Ron Brown, certified fitness trainer and author of The Body Fat Guide, crash diets and bariatric surgery can result not only in rapid weight loss, but also the loss of a substantial amount of muscle, causing the skin to droop and look "flabby". Before you break out the sleeveless tops, low-ride jeans or revealing skirts, work on getting your body well toned so that you will look your very best when you do begin to show a little more skin.

Fashion Mistake #2: Safety Pin Abuse

Given the state of the economy today, you may not have the money to add several new outfits to your wardrobe right now. This is quite understandable. However, it is a fashion mistake to abuse safety pins in order to hold your pants or skirts up. Safety pins should be used only in emergency situations (i.e. you unexpectedly loose a button on your pants, or your zipper suddenly breaks).

Safety pin abuse can cause irreparable damage to your clothing. It can also cause you a great deal of pain if your safety pin should somehow come undone and pierce your skin. Rather than go this route, it is advisable that you look into having a few of your favorite clothes altered until you can afford to buy some new ones.

Fashion Mistake #3: Dressing Like Your Teenage Daughter

If you've lost so much weight that your body looks as good as it did when you were in high school, congratulations! This is an accomplishment that few people ever reach, and you certainly deserve kudos. Now for the bad news: just because you look like you did when you were in high school doesn't mean that you should dress as though you are still in high school!

It is very tempting to want to turn back the hands of time once you've lost weight. Suddenly the Misses section of every department store seems to have a bunch of outdated, old fogy clothing that is not worthy of your hard-earned money. You look over at the Junior Miss section and feel right at home!

Granted, some women can pull off Junior Miss clothing. But intentionally trying to dress like your teenage daughter just because you have lost weight is not a good idea. You probably already look a few years younger as a result of having lost weight; why come across as though you are "trying" to look younger than your years?

I dunno Jamie, as a guy, I wish you wouldn't give this sort of advice to these ladies! Go on, show off! .... Nah, not really, never liked skimpy clothes. Actually, the problem up here in Obesityland is OVERWEIGHT people in skimpy clothes, men as well as women. I don't get it. That's why I dress sort of like Rodney Dangerfield, the big bowling shirt look, and I don't try to tuck it in! ~~~ mike ~~~
