Fashion Options Highlighted by Big Love

Big Love, which follows the drama-filled life of a fundamentalist Mormon family that is "living the principle" of plural marriage, while also struggling with its family ties to a repressive community that shares some of its beliefs, presents a range of interesting, practical and often modest fashion choices in the midst of it's soap opera style plot.

Each of the three wives in Big Love's main family has their own fashions style. Barb, who is the first wife, goes for soccer mom with a business edge. Her clothes are practical, fitted, stylish and also clearly comfortable. She's a great example of how to look put together and attractive without looking like you spend too much time or money on your appearance.

Nicky, the second wife, has some of the most interesting fashion choices on the show. With family ties to a cult-like compound, she grew up wearing "prairie clothes," -- that is long, loose pastel dresses with puffed sleeves reminiscent of 19th century western wear. Not attractive. But Nicky is vain and trying hard to be fashionable in the modern world while adhering to her personal traditions. Well-tailored long denim skirts, long-sleeve blouses in more stylish prints with interesting details and great accessories keep Nicky looking modest, modern and sexy. If only she were as good at figuring out the rest of her life as she is with her wardrobe the show's protagonists might face less drama.

The third wife, Margene, is a modern girl in every way. She's all about being young, casual and sexy, and the other wives don't always approve. But Margene is determined that just because he life is atypical, doesn't mean she has to be any less stylist. Bright colors, jersey materials and a hint of cleavage make Margene's young look.

Big Love is a fascinating, fictionalized look at a way of life that surely seems very alien to most viewers, while at the same time highlighting the problems that all families face from issues communication and problems with in-laws to practical concerns like finding time for yourself in the midst of a busy family life.

Great tips! Chloe Sevigny is such a fashion icon. It's funny that they throw her into such conservative garb.
