Fashion Review: Christian Dior Resort 2011 Collection

Mary Thatcher
Ever since John Galliano took the creative director helm at Christian Dior, he has manged to shy away from the lacy feminine clothes meant to be worn under garments, and created fashions that are soft, feminine, with occasional tailoring, and pink. While pink definitely dominate the Resort 2011 collection, mint, peach, lavender, white, and basic black and white also make up the collection. The clothes here look like a large scale Barbie doll wardrobe, yet the dresses have an elegance to them that look as if they really belong on a summer evening ballroom floor. Dresses with skirts that resemble 1860's fashions come to life here. Other dresses such as the lavender minidress have a silver glitter vine and floral pattern throughout the fabric which looks like something a wood sprite would be pleased to wear. This dress is definitely a favorite of mine, and can be combined with delicate silver jewelry such as thin hoop earrings and bangle bracelets. Then there is the peach jumpsuit, complete with a billowing overskirt that is open in the front to reveal the pants. A glitter pattern appears again on the bodice, along with a bow positioned slightly off center to the left. Dressy jumpsuits look great in any seasonal collection, providing an alternative to women who prefer the comfort of pants to a dress.

Daywear is elegantly understated in this collection and the white and pastel colored dress here is something that can be worn to the office or to a spring charity lunch. The dress has an A-line to it, and the pockets have a tailored edge. Another day dress that is a favorite is this pale blue and white striped one that is made out of sections which form the horizontal lines in the skirt. The bateau neckline on this dress gives it a fresh, summertime look that can be worn well through the warmest months of the year.

Combines accessories and shoes from your wardrobe for a new look with Dior's Resort 2011 fashions. Metallic shoes worn with the evening dresses will bring out the metallic threads in the fabric. Try bright colored jewelry with the black and white daytime garments.

Dior fashions can be purchased through the designer's boutique in New York City and Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
