Fashion Review: Isaac Mizrahi at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Spring 2010

Mary Thatcher
Isaac Mizrahi exhibited a palette of black, white, pink, gray and purple for his spring 2010 collection. The colors minus the basic black and white remind me of an English garden of wisteria, growing up a trellis leaning against a house. Lilacs also come to mind with this shade of purple, although they do not come out until June. Either way, these garments are feminine and are meant to be worn for the season they were created, and not just sitting in someone's closet. Sheath lines are popular, with bows added at the waist and hips for skirts and pants. The pants have front pleats to provide a slimming look at the waist. Many of these pants can be worn to the office with a blazer and any blouse in your wardrobe.

My favorite dress from the collection is this purple lame one, with just enough sparkle in the fabric for the daytime. The sheath is really fitted here and accents the hourglass shape of the female body. The dress is sleeveless with an almost straight neckline. This is what one wears to a formal dinner, dance party, or a cocktail party. The only accessory I would add here is a metallic belt, with gold as the color. Another dress worth mentioning is this one, with a floor length black skirt, white bodice, and shoulder straps that look like a twined serpent slowly moving across a branch. It is a rather unusual description, but Isaac is known for his occasional whimsical touches in fashion. The skirt is a sheer black piece covered with black polka dots and a cascading bow down the front. The skirt itself looks couture, another signature of Isaac's clothing design brilliance. One last dress that is an eye catcher is this white one with a black floral Persian design on it. The lower part of the skirt is full, with sheath lines dominating the upper part of the dress. Wear a dress with these lines for the fall season, in any color or pattern, to set a spring 2010 trend in women's fashion.

Handbags are the dominant accessory with many of these garments. Most of the dresses are so beautiful the only required accessory is a small piece of jewelry. With the purple dress above, gold and emerald are my favorite. Whatever appeal to you and you have in your armoire, wear it with a Mizrahi dress next spring. Isaac Mizrahi fashions are high-end in price and can be purchased through Bergdorf Goodman.
