Fashion and Shopping Tips: How to Dress an Hourglass Shape

If you possess an hourglass shape, you know that shopping for clothing is not always an easy task. The ideal hourglass silhouette features curves in all the right places, complemented by a tiny waistline. A true hourglass shape has balance, and is proportionate in form -- (i.e. the beautiful Sophia Loren in her prime). Although many women envy this shape, if you have it then you know that, shopping for clothing can be problematic at times. Of course, you can choose to totally accentuate your curves, or be modest while still wearing flattering attire. Here are a few tips on how to dress, and flatter your hourglass shape.

Elongate your shape. Flatter your body type, by wearing clothes that elongate and slenderize your shape. Avoid cropped pants, shirts or anything that does not lengthen your overall look. Long boot-cut pants and jeans will even out an hourglass shape, while skinny jeans will emphasize the natural curve of your hips. There is nothing wrong with showing off your curves, but always consider how certain clothes will complement your body type.

Get garments altered. Hourglass shapes often struggle with finding clothes that truly fit. You know the story. You shop for jeans -- they fit in the hips, but they are entirely too big for your waistline. Avoid this scenario by wearing low-rise jeans, or have your clothing altered by a professional. Believe it or not, alterations are usually reasonable in terms of the pricing. Plus nothing looks better on an hourglass figure, than clothes that look like they were made just for you.

Wear tops that fit your waist or accessorize. Those super cute tops and dresses that happen to be oversized, and shapeless may look great on everyone else, but you probably want to avoid them. Often, shirts that hide your waistline will make you look as though you are rocking maternity wear. What's the solution? Wear tops that are fitted around the waistline, or wear belts over your loose fitting tops. A great look for a classic hourglass shape is to wear a long tailored button-down shirt, and a pair of dark jeans. Pair the outfit with a wide belt that you wear over your shirt, but around your waist. This will accentuate your small waistline, and play up those fabulous curves.

I remember watching my sister pick out clothing as a young girl. She has the perfect body and I always was so shocked when I looked at mine versus hers. :)
