Fashion Tips: How to Wear Black on Black

Basic black clothes are a fashion staple. I cannot even begin to count all of the various articles of clothing in my closet that are black. Since its a color that literally goes with everything, many of us have tons of tops, slacks, skirts, dresses and shoes in this shade. Ever thought about wearing a black on black ensemble? Dressing from head to toe in a color that is associated with gloom and darkness is not exactly a fashion statement that most women like to make, but if done the right way it can look very chic and elegant. Here are a few fashion tips on how to wear black on black clothing.

A very timeless and elegant look is a black turtleneck top with a pair of solid black pants. Remember Audrey Hepburn in 'Funny Face' and her stylish black on black beatnik look? This is the image you want to convey, that of a classic style icon, and you simply cannot get more iconic than the elegant Audrey. For a black on black sweater and pants look, wear simple make-up with classic pearl earrings. For your shoes, wear a pair of sexy black kitten heels or ballet flats and you will look like a classy beatnik in the spirit of Audrey.

If you want to take the black top and pants look up a notch, go with a basic crew neck top (long or short sleeved), and accessorize with colorful jewelry. This is a look I like to wear to the office, as it is both professional and fun. I also like to wear a colorful belt or scarf tied around my waist, with a pair of matching pumps. Black on black is absolutely perfect for accenting with colorful, funky accessories.

A basic black dress is a must have for every stylish woman's wardrobe, but to avoid looking like you are about to attend a funeral, avoid wearing a dainty string of pearls and flesh colored stockings with your dress. While this may seem like a safe choice, the truth is it looks matronly. Wear several chunky strands of faux pearls with a matching bracelet and patterned tights instead. This is more fun and edgy, and as with the top and pants look, you can accent a black dress with colorful jewelry magnificently.

When wearing black on black, make sure you inject little hints of color here and there. Just one belt or necklace can make all the difference between looking stylish or looking like a frumpy goth. Keep your make-up simple and classic, and most importantly, carry yourself well!
