Fashion Trend: What the Heggings Are Jeggings?

Wynn Murray
You might think "Jeggings" is the name of a butler in a mid-Victorian British novel, but you'd be wrong.

"Jeggings" is actually the clever and inventive name for the next new thing in fashion: jean leggings. (Jeans plus leggings...equals jeggings...get it?)

Besides being terribly fun to say (or maybe because of it), jeggings are catching on across the country. They're leggings screen printed to look like jeans, but they're not denim. They're actually stretchy and spandex-y. Being slightly thinner a material than denim, they'll probably create the illusion that your legs are suddenly skinnier. Plus, while you enjoy the style of jeans, you'll get to enjoy the comfort of spandex (ha ha ha).

Some of you out there are probably scratching your head in complete confuddlement over the concept of jeggings, and if you are, I don't blame you.

Another portion of the population out there realizes the sheer brilliance of the invention and is wondering how they can get their hands on a pair of these puppies as soon as possible. If you're part of this group, then there's good news. You can find jeggings virtually anywhere these days.

If you don't feel like stealing them off a hipster, here are a couple spots where you can get your very own pair of jeggings. You can get an $89 pair of jeggings from Bebe, complete with zip-up pockets. New York and Company offers a slightly more affordable pair for $26.95, but these pockets are fake (not that you'd want to put a lot of stuff in you leggings. Or would you?) I've also seen jeggings being sold at Icing, that estrogen-flooded little place at the mall full of bangle bracelets and, yes, peacock hair ornaments.

Caveat: If you're legs are not completely sticks, then jeggings may not be the right choice for you. They're really hugging and revealing, and if you've got any junk in your trunk, you might think twice about having it all hang out there in your jeggings. Just as everyone should not wear spandex, everyone should not wear jeggings.

Other than that, they're an interesting new garment. It's almost surprising that it's taken this long for jeggings to develop.

What do you think about jeggings?

Laughed with you at your "ha ha ha" about the comfort of spandex. I've worn spandex that were worse than the tightest girdles but I like the idea of jeggings. I now have a new word to add to my vocabulary. Will this be a trend or become a classic?
