Fashion for the Woman at Home

Focus on Fashion

Vicki Messer
Women at home, whether we have young children or not, need to give some attention to appearances. So with that in mind, I would like to provide a few suggestions for looking and feeling our best at home. I am not suggesting that we go around looking like June Cleaver or Donna Reed on those 1950s television shows, but we do need to pay attention to how we look, even at home.

Every stage and phase of life brings with it changes in our wardrobes. This is especially true for women due to the wide range of life changes and whether or not we work outside the home.

I have worked in offices for many years and put together a decent wardrobe appropriate for those situations. But when it came to staying at home with babies and toddlers, the concept of style seemed to go out the window.

Over the years, I learned that no matter whether I am at home or working outside the home, I always feel better about myself when I am appropriately dressed. Being at home most of the time can become a little depressing if we don't do something to help ourselves feel better. Just taking some time first thing in the day to style our hair, put on a little make-up and a well coordinated outfit can give us a lift that will help carry us through a very busy day.

Casual Attire Do's and Dont's
There are many choices for women in casual attire. Some of the choices will be dictated by the season of the year, weather conditions, and just personal choices. Shorts, jeans, slacks or khakis are all excellent choices for wear around the house. One of the first considerations is comfort. Fabrics need to allow for a lot of movement and they should be washable. It is a simple matter to choose a color coordinated shirt, sweater, or top to go with neutral colored shorts or slacks. Jeans also can be paired with any color and style of top. Many women love sweat pants because they are so comfortable, but this is not a good habit. Sweat pants have no shape at all and can end up causing us to look and feel frumpy.

Sometimes I Just Can't Get it All Together
Of course we all have "those" days when we just don't have the inclination to get all fixed up. Sometimes just a comfy bathrobe and slippers is the order of the day. After all, this is one of the "perks" of our stay-at-home job. However, this should be the exception and not the norm.

The Well-Heeled Woman
Low-heeled shoes are very important at home. A good shoe should fit your foot properly and provide you with good arch support and cushioning. Most women at home are on their feet most of the day, so shoes are extremely important. Many women choose to wear flip-flops and then end up with foot fatigue before the day is finished. Changing from one shoe style to another during the day is also a great way to give your hard-working feet a rest.

Regardless of the stage of life or our age, remaining fashion conscious is key to success and being an active participant in life. When we look good, we feel good. It really is just that simple.

YOu are so right about having a wardrobe, whether we work at home or not. In the course of a day, I often have to deal with people here for home maintenance chores or just a surprise visit from a neighbor. I do believe in making a good impression, even if dressed casually. :) Thanks for the reminder.

I prefer to be comfortable, in my home and I will wear whatever is comfortable, not what looks good, I dress better when I go out and that is how I balance it. It works well for me.

When I started working from home, I fell into the habit of not dressing until late in the morning. Then I found out that when I bothered to clean myself up early in the day, I got a lot more work done! It really does have an effect on my attitude during the day.
