Fashionable Maternity Looks for Spring

Lisa Riggs
Maternity fashions have really come a long way. Long gone are the shapeless pieces that feature large bows and arrows pointing to the belly. Today's looks are sleek and flattering, with special attention to celebrating the beautiful shape that comes with pregnancy. It is no longer expected that non maternity clothing needs to be relegated to the depths of the closet once the test comes back positive, either. Many of today's trends can be worn well into the second trimester depending on a woman's individual size and weight gain. Here are some suggestions on fun and stylish Spring looks for mothers-to-be.

Fill Your Closet with Pastels. Spring is the time to put away the drab colors of winter and enjoy the lighter colors of the season. Over sized tee shirts in pink, yellow and pale green will beautifully flatter your pregnancy glow and very sweetly enhance your growing baby bump. If you just feel more comfortable in navy blue, black or brown, add a bit of pastel to your outfits in your headbands, belts, jewelery and handbags. The little pop of color will add some visual interest to your favorite looks and give a nice nod to both the Spring season and the joy of your current status.

Add Layers to a Maxi Dress. If you loved the comfort of your favorite maxi dresses before you were pregnant, enjoy that comfort now. This stylish dress is roomy enough to allow space for baby too. Drape a cardigan sweater or a lightweight blazer over your shoulders on days where there is still a nip in the air. A denim jacket and scarf can also be worn to up the style factor and protect you against the chilly seasonal winds. Take care that the length of the dress does not hinder your movement and cause a potential safety hazard to you and your precious cargo.

Enjoy the Versatility of Leggings. Both regular and maternity style leggings are great staple pieces for the expectant mother. The elastic waist and stretchy fabric adds warmth and comfort to a variety of looks. A long sleeve thermal tee or fleece hooded sweatshirt looks terrific paired with these bottoms and a pair of comfortable sneakers. A button down shirt or long sleeve cotton tee can be worn with leggings and flats for a day at the office. Going one or two sizes up on your regular brand will save you money on maternity clothes and ensure you have several pairs that fit after baby is born.

Embrace the Bohemian Look. Peasant tops, flowing skirts and wide legged pants are all great looks for pregnant gals. The extra room increases the comfort level while the patterns and cuts are very current and fashionable. Adding a layer of beads and wearing hair in a loose and casual style pulls the looks together beautifully. Dress up a top with a pair of trousers on the bottom for work and dress down a skirt with a white tee and white sneakers for play. Add a bag with a floral pattern or a bit of fringe to keep the theme throughout the ensemble.
