Fast Fixes for Sunburn Pain

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
When the sun is shining bright we feel the urge to get outside and enjoy it's healthy rays. But those healthy rays can be dangerous, especially if you are not using sunscreen. Sunscreen not only protects our skin from sunburn, it also helps protect our skin from the UV rays that are known to cause skin cancer. In the case that you forgot your sunscreen and found yourself with some painful, red sunburn, here are six burn easing fixes to help your skin heal and help you feel a little less pain while that happens!

You can try the old stand-by. Aloe is healing and soothing. Aloe is a wonderful plant, all natural cure for any kind of skin issues. When shopping for aloe in a bottle make sure you look for something all natural and that it does not have any alcohol in it. All alcohol will do is dry your skin out more, which will make the sunburn even more painful.

My favorite old stand-by, something my grandmother passed on to me, is to use Noxzema. This face cleanser has cooling eucalyptus in it that will ease your burn. But it can dry it out if you don't keep applying it at regular intervals.

Another old fashioned trick is Epsom salts. These salts help with skin abrasions, muscle pains and even sunburn. Make a poultice with a little bit of water, or suck in a tub with Epsom salts. It will ease the pain of the burn and help hydrate your sore and burning skin.

If you like soaking in the tub you can try a tea bath. The tannins in tea have anti-inflammatory effects and can help ease the pain and redness of a sunburn. Just toss about ten tea bags in your lukewarm bath water and let them soak until the water is a light brown. Soak for about 15 minutes for soothing results.

If you are in a lot of pain try an Aspirin poultice. This anti-inflammatory pain killer will have your skin saying "ah" in no time. Just drop two tablets in a small cup of water then mash them up. Spread the mixture out onto your burn then gently wipe it off in 15 minutes with a wet washcloth.

You have heard the saying "Milk, it does the body good", well, that can be said for the outside of the body as well as the inside. Make a milk compress out of a mixture of equal parts milk and water. Dip a washcloth in the mix and place it on your burn, letting your hot skin soak in the lactic acid from the milk that will help restore your skins ph balance.
